John 12:31 ( posted 11-26-13 )

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Let's continue.

Now is the judgment of this world:

We will find that later in this chapter we are studying, Jesus clearly said;

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.John 12:47

At this moment Jesus inferred who will be the judge...referring to His Father;

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 12:48

Even though Jesus said;

Now in the verse of our study, keep in mind that a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day to the Lord;

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2 Peter 3:8

Nowcan be a very long time to us but to the Lord, almost immediate.

From the moment Jesus made this statement, in actuality the judgment of this world is at least ( though not limited to ) a two-fold process over a period of time consisting of more than 3007 years.

The signing of the 7 year peace treaty the “ antichrist “ brings the Jews and the Arabs to agreeing on in the future, commonly known among evangelicals as the 7 year tribulation period is referred to in the Holy Bible as the time of God's wrath. This is at least 2000 years from the time Jesus made this statement about this world's judgment being Now.

The next form of judgment is another 1000 years after this when God brings fire down from Heaven on the armies who once again gather around Jerusalem to destroy Jesus and the Jews...after satan is released from the abyss.

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. Revelation 20:7-9

The final judgment will be an undetermined length of time after this.

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:11-15

Again, keep in mind this final judgment will be at least 3007 years from the moment Jesus made this statement in the verse of our study.

now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

The Greek word “ archon “ translated prince means ruler, chief, magistrate, a first in rank or power.

Jesus said clearly about satan;

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. “   John 14:30

Paul called satan the god of this world;

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. “ 2 Corinthians 4:4

Once again, the now Jesus referred to in the verse of our study;

now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

will not happen to satan for at least 3007 years from the moment Jesus said this.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10

Satan as the “ god “ and “ prince “ of this present world still has the ability to deceive and to mislead.

However, because of the death of Jesus, for those of us who believe in Jesus, satan has no stronghold over us. His power has been broken.

Yes, He can deceive even those of us who believe in Jesus but he has no power over people who believe in Jesus.

I will continue with verse 32 in the next study.

John 10:28 ( posted 4-3-12 )

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

This is going to take me some time to discuss.

As you should know by now, I look at all verses that pertain to a given subject.

I look at the whole picture…the rest of the story.

In the verse of our study the subject is eternal life and whether we can lose our salvation or not.

Jesus lost most of His followers when He got down to brass tacks about truth and commitment to Him.

If you remember in an earlier study we learned that Jesus even asked His initial 12 disciples if they were going to leave Him as well.

“  But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. “   John 6:64-69

Even Judas did not leave Him at this time.

If you read this carefully you will find there are 2 categories of people among Jesus’ followers…some who did not believe and some who did believe but would betray Him.

“  But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. “

One of Webster’s definitions for “ betray “ is - “ to break faith with.”

One cannot betray someone who was not ever a part of that someone to begin with.

Even Judas believed in Jesus and was counted as a born again christian and an apostle before he betrayed Jesus…or else it would not have been an actual act of betrayal.

“ Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. “ Acts 1:16-17

Yes, Judas actually;

had obtained part of this ministry. “

and Judas;

“ was numbered with us, “

and Matthias who would be selected to replace Judas was to fill Judas’ position from which he fell from;

“ That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. “   Acts 1:25

And not only this, for those of you who teach that people are preselected and chosen to be saved, Judas was also chosen!

“ Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? “ John 6:70

Jesus did not just choose 11, He chose all 12 of them!

“ Have not I chosen you twelve, “

As difficult as it is for most evangelicals to swallow, Judas was at one time on his way to Heaven…but is now in hell.

Jesus had given Judas eternal life because he believed in Jesus.

Anyone who believes in Jesus and is living in continuance of believing, hearing Him, knowing Him, and following Him, has been given eternal life.

Let’s continue.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

And I give unto them eternal life;

Who are the people Jesus said He has given eternal life to?

They are the people in the preceding verse that I discussed in the previous study.

Jesus’ sheep.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: “  John 10:27

And I give unto them eternal life;

Notice Jesus is the One who gives eternal life.

If you remember in an earlier study we learned that Jesus also said;

“  And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.John 6:39-40

This is important for us to realize.

Jesus is the salvation of our soul…not the common popular myth that believing that God exists saves our soul.

This is one reason Jesus said that only a few people will actually find the way to Heaven.

Jesus is God’s plan for our salvation.

Jesus made it quite clear when He said;

Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. “   John 8:23-24

Notice Jesus did not say, if we cannot live up to His standards of holiness, we will die in our sins.

Jesus only said;

for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

To receive eternal life from Jesus He requires that we believe in Him.

Sadly, this is where people have trouble.

Eternal life is given by Jesus in response to our faith in Him…not how good a person we can be.

and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

The same Jesus who said this, and who also said;

I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.  John 6:39

also said;

While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. “  John 17:12

and also said;

They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. “   Luke 8:13

while the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write;

“ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith,“   1 Timothy 4:1

and;

“  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, “   2 Thessalonians 2:3

Keep in mind that these people mentioned are not the same ones Jesus said He never knew.

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. “   Matthew 7:23

Like Judas who lost his salvation, so did the people Jesus mentioned here;

They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. “   Luke 8:13

Since these people did once believe;

which for a while believe,

Jesus had given them eternal life too since eternal life is based on believing in Jesus.

I will continue with this verse in the next study.

John 10:27 ( posted 4-2-12 )

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Let’s continue.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

The Greek words “ ema probata “ translated My sheep is for sure Jesus claiming His sheep to be His…no question.

However, the Greek word “ probata “ translated sheep means something that is walking forward. In this case, the “ something that walks forward “ being followers of Jesus as being sheep thus translated to be in reference to people Jesus calls His sheep  since obviously Jesus refers to Himself as our shepherd;

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. “   John 10:14

even though the Greek word “ probaton “ is not in this specific statement Jesus makes and instead 2 times in this statement Jesus calls us, being the something that walks forward, as “ ema “, which means “ mine.”

While obviously since we belong to Jesus and He is the good shepherd;

 I am the good shepherd,

it is obvious we can be called His sheep.

However, He refers to those of us who belong to Him as sheep that are moving forward.

My friend, everything that has to do with salvation and eternal life is in the present tense - that is, ongoing.

The Greek word “ akouousin “ translated hear  is also in the present ongoing tense and has the meaning of a deep continuance of presently listening to God in our heart.

The Greek word “ akolouthousin “ translated they follow is also in the present tense and means to be in the same way with, to accompany.

 It means the same as the Greek word “ akolouthei “ translated “ follow “ as used in;

“ And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. “   Revelation 14:13

I will discuss verse 28 in the next study.

Romans 3:1-2 ( posted 3-25-12 )

“ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. “

Let’s continue.

“ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

Just after Paul gets through telling us to be a Jew in the flesh, circumcision and the Law does not get us to Heaven nor does it renew our relationship with God and give us eternal life, he now is going to point out that the Jews, circumcision and the Law are still important to all of us.

We already know that no one can obey the Law.

This is a needless statement, since it is quite obvious that nobody can obey the Law.

Jesus is the only person that could fulfill the Law and He actually fulfilled the Law in His humanity!

Amazing!

Jesus still valued the Law.

Jesus said clearly;

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. “   Matthew 5:17-18

The Law is all about Jesus.

“ Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. “    Galatians 3:21-26

“ Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. “

Jews, circumcision and the Law profits us in many ways, Paul is saying here.

Most importantly, God entrusted His words to the Jews in the Law.

Check this out!

The Greek word “ episteuthesan “ translated “ unto them were committed “ means to have faith in, entrust, believe, commit to trust, put in trust with.

This is interesting!

God actually looked at the Jews as a people for Himself to believe in.

As we would say to someone we think highly of for whatever reason - “ I believe in you.”

To say something like this to someone we know means that we trust that person.

This is how God looked at the Jews when He gave them the Law.

He trusted and believed in them to be the carriers of not only the Law, the Old Covenant but within the Old Covenant as it was given to them containing the way to the New Covenant…Jesus Christ!

Moses said to the Jews who stayed with God while other Jews left God and followed idols and were destroyed;

“ Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.

Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it. “   Deuteronomy 4:3-14

Notice that there are only 10 commandments, as the rest of the Law is statutes and judgments.

Many people confuse the 10 commandments with the statutes and judgments throughout the rest of the Law, even though they were meant to be kept as well.

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

This is one reason Jesus never quoted things from the Law like;

“ What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp,

And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people: “   Leviticus 17:3-4

and;

“ And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.

But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity. “   Leviticus 17:15-16

when Jesus was talking about issues concerning the heart and our relationship with God and each other.

The statutes and judgments in the Law God obviously did not write on the 2 tables of stone.

Just ten commandments that dealt with moral issues of the heart.

This is why the conversation between Jesus and the young man who came to Jesus asking Him how to inherit eternal life was restricted to the initial 10 commandments and not about whether this man ate animals that were killed by other animals.

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. “     Matthew 19:16-22

David talked about how important Jews are.

“ He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.

He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD. “   Psalm 147:19-20

“ Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. “

The Greek word “ logia “ translated “ oracles “ means an utterance of God.

Notice Paul used the same Greek word as John did when he said about Jesus;

 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men. “  John 1:1-4

The Greek word “ logos “ translated “ Word “ also means an utterance of God.

I’m not done with this verse.

I want to discuss the Greek word “ logos “ used here in Paul’s statement and in John’s statement.
