Romans 7:5-6 ( posted 4-8-14 )

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Let's continue.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. “

What Paul is saying here is that before we became a new creation in Christ Jesus based on our faith in Him, while we were under the bondage of sin, the Law pointing out what is sin, condemned us to eternal hell.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. “

Keep in mind that the Law was not despised by Jesus, having been the One who made the Law.

Jesus clearly said;

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.   Matthew 5:17

Since Jesus being God made the Law, someone had to fulfill it.

Jesus is the one who did.

As a result, Jesus made it possible to live a life that is not under condemnation, as it was under the Law.

A person can now live a life of freedom, not freedom to sin but freedom to live a life free of condemnation...even though we sin.

According to Paul, because of our faith in Jesus we are a new creation, created in Christ Jesus;

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. “  2 Corinthians 5:17

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. “   Galatians 6:15

This is what Paul meant in the verse of our study;

that we should serve in newness of spirit,“

While being a new person created in Jesus because of our faith in Him, we can confess our sins unto Him and He is faithful to forgive us our sins;

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, nd his word is not in us. “  1 John 1:7-10

We are no longer under the condemnation of the Law;

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. “   Romans 8:1

I will continue with verse 7 in the next study.

Romans 7:1-4 ( posted 3-21-14 )

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Let's continue.

To better explain this chapter I may have to do more frequent studies so Paul's point will stay fresh on our mind.

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? “

Not all the born again christians in Rome were Jewish converts.

This is why Paul said to those who were Jewish converts;

(for I speak to them that know the law,) “

The Jewish converts knew how controlling the Law was.

When the Law was broken in part, a blood sacrifice had to be made by using a slaughtered animal. Technically, this was done as a type of the coming Messiah, Son of God Jesus, who would become the Supreme and ultimate sacrifice.

Abraham, Moses and others knew about Jesus...according to Jesus.

If the sin against the Law was not atoned for by a blood sacrifice the sin was ruled by the Law as sin unto death and dominated the person who committed the sin until he or she physically died.

This is why Paul said in the verse of our study;

how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

This is why Paul said this about the difference between the Law and grace;

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. “  Romans 6:23

When we sin now as believers in Jesus, it is not unto death...death being eternal separation from God, not just physical.

Paul said to the Corinthians;

The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. “ 1 Corinthians 7:39

The Law bound a man and wife together for life.

Moses, who wrote the Law allowed divorce for this reason;

He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. Matthew 19:8

Jesus admitted there is an allowance for divorce;

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, exceptit befor fornication,... Matthew 19:9

Obviously, just as God integrated certain laws within physics, nature, sin, moral issues and life in general, so God established a law about a man and woman in marriage.

However, always remember that even though God is not for divorce, divorce is not the unpardonable sin.

Only blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin...never to be forgiven in this life nor in the life to come.

Jesus clearly said;

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemyagainsttheHolyGhost shall not be forgiven unto men.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in theworldto come.“    Matthew 12:31-32

Just as Jesus said this warning to those of us who follow Him, ( since obviously those who do not follow Jesus would'nt care if they were forgiven for the sin of blasphemy, especially since, according to Jesus, they do not even know who the Holy Spirit is ) in the next life or not;

...neither in this world, neither in theworldto come.

likewise, John said this to warn those of us who follow Jesus...not to those who do not follow Jesus;

If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. “   1 John 5:16

My friend, we can choose to believe what we want but this is what the Bible says.

Statistically, there are more born again christians who are guilty of the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit than born again christians who are divorced.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For those of us who believe in Jesus are freed from the Law, sin and death as the result of sin – that is, eternal separation from God in eternal hell.

It is interesting that Paul compared the dominance of the Law as opposed to grace, to the bondage between a man and woman in marriage.

Notice that Paul said even though as the result of believing in Jesus Christ, receiving His grace and being delivered from the dominance of the Law regarding sin unto death, those of us who do believe in Jesus are also married to each another and not only to each another but actually married to Jesus Himself.

Here is the reason those of us who believe in Jesus are married to each other and to Jesus Himself;

that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

I will continue with verse 5 in the next study.

Romans 6:22-23 ( posted 3-11-14 )

But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let's continue.

But now being made free from sin, “

Paul said not only are we free from being dominated and controlled by sin and could never overcome the temptation to sin nor overcome our own desire and lust for sin, we are also free from the wages of sin, which is death.

and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

When we sin now, if we confess our sin to the Lord, Jesus will forgive us and wash us with His blood. We are no longer subject to eternal hell because of our faith in Jesus.

As we end our study of Romans chapter 6, I want to say a few things.

Throughout society on this planet there are many beliefs, opinions and ideas on how a human being can get to Heaven and even then, most people believe no matter what, because God is so good, He will eventually allow all people into Heaven, even if they go to hell to pay for their sins for a while.

Jesus is the only one who claimed hell is eternal, not temporary. Everyone else thinks hell is only temporary...if it even exists at all.

According to the verses of our study in the book of Romans, the only way to Heaven and to be forgiven is by resting our inner faith in Jesus Christ.

This is why Jesus said;

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.“   John 3:16-18

Most people think they are children of God because God created them and therefore that automatically makes them a child of God.

However, Jesus claimed to be the only child of God.

If we believe in Jesus then the Holy Spirit adopts our spirit into God's family and then and only then does anyone become a child of God. This is spiritual and not physical. Our bodies will decay into the ground.

Jesus is the only child of God physically.

Always remember and believe these Biblical truths until your physical death or until Jesus returns for you, whichever comes first.

God the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jesus are all one in the same God.

God became a human being and called Himself Jesus.

Just as the Bible teaches that a man and wife are one flesh, so God the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jesus are one God.

This is why God wants our inner faith directed toward Jesus. Not only is Jesus God's only begotten Son but is also God's only chosen way for any of us to make it to Heaven.

When we make the decision to believe in Jesus, God redeems us back to Himself with even a better relationship than Adam and Eve had before they disobeyed God.

Because of Jesus and our faith in Him, we are no longer subject to eternal hell when we sin and we now have the right to claim any blessing and favor God has for us.

It is God's nature to bless and reward and all we have to do is ask, because we believe in God's only Son, Jesus.

My friend, it is Jesus who will get us to Heaven...nothing else and no one else.

God created us with the right to choose who or what we want to believe.

Every religion that exists claims to be the only way to Heaven.

Jesus was not the only one to make this claim.

So, what will our choice be before we die...Jesus or someone or something else which also claims to be the only way to Heaven?

According to Jesus, outside of Him, all other ground is sinking sand.

There are many ways presented in society on how to make it to Heaven, some initiated by human beings and some initiated by satan.

This is why the Bible warns;

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 16:25

The choice is ours.

Since Jesus is real, if we choose Him, He responds with blessed assurance that we will be okay after we physically die.

The other ways provide no assurance. This is why people are afraid to die. People do not really know where they will be or what will happen to them after they draw that last breath in this life.

The Lord bless you.

I will continue with Romans chapter 7 in the next study.

Romans 6:20-21 ( posted 2-20-14 )

For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Let's continue.

For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. “

The Greek word “ eleutheroi “ translated “ free “ means the same as in verses 18 and 22...exempt from obligation and liability.

To be honest, I'm not sure why Paul compared our past as being free from righteousness to us presently as born again christian believers in Jesus as being free from sin.

It is possible he was referring to when Jesus said we cannot serve both God and money or sin.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.   Matthew 6:24

Unless a person has seared his or her conscience nobody in right mind wants to be free from righteousness. Even the unsaved have certain moral values on some things in life...though not everything. Even though there are many sins an unsaved person would rather choose to commit because of lust and love for the sin, there are sins they out of conscience, would rather choose not to commit because of the results that they would not like to experience from committing those sins or see what would happen to people they love and care for.

Paul obviously was referring to the inherited righteousness of Christ that we receive when we believe in Jesus. This kind of righteousness goes above and beyond even the moral values of the unsaved.

When we receive the righteousness of Jesus Christ upon our faith in Him we are now slaves to His righteousness and care to please God in our lifestyle. When we were slaves to sin we cared nothing about what God thought or felt.

What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

This clarifies the statement Paul made in the previous verse.

Our freedom to sin only led to one thing...death.

I will continue with verse 22 in the next study.

Romans 6:19 ( posted 1-30-14 )

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Let's continue.

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: “

The Greek word “ astheneian “ translated “ infirmity “ means weakness, disease, sickness, feebleness of mind and body, moral frailty.

Jesus said;

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeediswilling, but the fleshisweak.   Matthew 26:41

Paul is talking to the Roman followers of Jesus on their level because he admits he struggles with sin like they do.

Paul said;

For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. “ Romans 7:19

Take note that Paul was not willfully living in sin, loving sin.

This is the difference between sinning and willfully living in sin and enjoying it.

Paul declared in the present tense, not past tense about himself;

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? “ Romans 7: 24

Yes, Paul did say;

that I am! “

Not, I was.

The same Paul that declared to be perfect in Christ also said he was presently “ wretched “.

The difference between Paul and a born again christian living in willful sin as a lifestyle is that Paul did not fantasize of willfully committing sin against the Lord.

The writer of Hebrews said;

For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. “   Hebrews 10:26-27

for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. “

Again, rather than lusting for, living for and loving sin and fantasizing of what sin or sins to commit for fun, change our desire to that of the new creature God made in us when we came to believe in Jesus His Son and now follow after righteousness.

Jesus clearly said;

Blessedarethey which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6

If we do this, we do not have to be concerned about our inner faith changing and becoming apostate.

It is difficult to keep our faith in “ the faith “ while willfully living in sin.

I will continue with verse 20 in the next study.
