Romans 7:25 ( posted 11-11-14 )
“ I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. “
“ I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. “
Paul answered his own rhetorical question in the verse of our last study;
“ O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? “ Romans 7:24
Notice that Paul said he thanks God “ through “ Jesus Christ our Lord.
Paul knew that no human being can come to God except through Jesus, God's only begotten Son.
Jesus clearly said;
“ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.“ John 14:6
We can claim to believe in God, believe there is a God, believe there is some sort of deity out there, claim we even talk to God or have heard from God but if the communication and relationship with the God we claim to believe in is not through God's only begotten Son Jesus, then we are incredibly deceived...and for sure, not of “ the faith “.
“ For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. “ 1 Timothy 2:5-6
Paul also said;
“ So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. “ 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
...which brings us to the next statement Paul made in the verse of our study;
“ So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. “
The Greek word “ noi “ translated “ mind ” means the mind in thought, feeling or will, understanding.
Since our born again relationship with God is only in our spirit through our faith in Jesus Christ, and not our brain, it is obviously clear Paul is referring to his understanding and will in his heart to please God.
If you remember in my earlier studies we learned that Paul talked of several laws that exist.
This particular “ law “ Paul refers to in the verse of our study is God's moral law, not the Law of Moses.
It is said that some doctrines formed on this statement Paul made here in the verse of our study, to prove Paul himself was not even saved.
I know just as there are people, including evangelicals who have verbally said they do not like James, the book of James, likewise there are people who do not like Paul.
The reason is because a lot of what Paul and James said does not fit with most doctrinal theology and philosophy.
Jesus said nobody can serve 2 masters;
“ No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.“ Luke 16:13
So, Paul is not saying he was living in sin and pleasing God at the same time as a lifestyle.
What Paul was admitting is when he did commit sin in his flesh he was subjecting himself to the still existing law of sin.
However, Jesus can rescue him from the law of sin.
“ That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. “ Romans 5:21
If you also remember in my earlier studies, we learned this is not what Paul wanted to do.
This is the difference between a born again christian who lovingly, willingly, lustfully craves living in sin and after the flesh, as opposed to a born again christian who does not want to but still commits sin.
Here it is in summary... just how we are as born again christians.
The old nature still exists even though we are a new creation in Christ Jesus.
We still have the will to choose which way to live.
Living in denial will not help us.
We must acknowledge whether we are wilfully living in the flesh or in our new creation.
If we are willingly living in our flesh we must repent and ask God to forgive us.
The reason for the 2 natures living and existing together is because God knows that some of us will willingly choose to reject Christ before He returns... and go the old route again.
Sad but Biblically true.
As Paul told Timothy before he died;
“ For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. “ 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Like Paul, we must also continue in the faith and keep the faith to the end in order to be saved when we physically die or Jesus returns, whichever comes first.
Since our salvation is based on our faith in Jesus, if we change our faith then we are no longer saved.
That finishes Romans chapter 7.
My friend, may Jesus bless you.
I love you in Christ.
