Romans 2:8-10 ( posted 10-23-11 )

“ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:   “

Let’s continue.

As we learned in the last study, eternal life is promised to those who keep the faith to the end of life.

Paul said clearly when he knew it was time for him to die;

“ For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. “    2 Timothy 4:6-8

Jesus said clearly;

But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. “  Matthew 24:13

Always remember this Biblical fact!

“ Predestination “ and “ eternal security - once saved, always saved “ will not get us to Heaven but willfully remaining in “ the faith “ by enduring will.

“ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, “

Instead of eternal life that is promised to those who endure in “ the faith “ to the end of life;

“ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: “   Romans 2:7...

for those who reject Jesus Christ, God‘s wrath;

“ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, “ verse 8

The Greek literally reads - “ to the ones of self-seeking and disobeying the truth but obeying unrighteousness, wrath and anger. “

While the people Paul described in the verse of our last study, verse 7 are people who look beyond themselves and obey the truth that God has given to every human being in our conscience to know His truth, the rest not only willfully reject God’s truth but actually give themselves over to living unto themselves and obeying wickedness, rather than obeying God.

Incredible that a human being would commit himself or herself to actually obeying sin but it happens and most people do this, not a few.

What is interesting is the Greek word “ eritheias “ translated “ contentious “ means intrigue, self-seeking, faction.

In other words, these people Paul talks about are people who go against those who do obey God’s truth.

They are haters of not only God but haters of people who do good, especially those who follow Jesus Christ…because they hate Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, there is a feeling of resentment in the heart of most human beings to want to live unto themselves, and I have found that this resentment is actually in the heart of some born again followers of Jesus Christ.

From my life experience in talking to people both saved and unsaved, there is a resentment in the heart of human beings that God only gave human beings 2 choices of where to spend eternity…hell or Heaven.

Most people, including both the saved and the unsaved wish they could live young and disease free with all the money in the world to live on, and to live without God’s involvement and especially without satan’s involvement. People generally wish they could live unto themselves, wishing they could live eternally on their own without God and satan, no hell to worry about and no God to worry about having to answer to after physical death.

This is true of human nature.

I had a church person tell me she thought that God did not give us much choice in only giving us Heaven and hell to choose from.

Interesting, since I personally have never even considered a third alternative or option…ever!

All my life I have known that I was not my own…that God created me.

I have always known that I was not created for me but for God.

I don’t deny that I have been selfish and sought to fulfill my own desires but in the end I have always known I was created for God and will someday die and go to be with God who created me. I never knew anything else but that.

I have always known that because of putting my inner faith in Jesus Christ as Jesus requires in order to make it to Heaven, will keep me out of hell when I die…that I cannot earn Heaven but will be there because of my faith in Jesus Christ.

But to live an alternative third choice such as living unto myself without God or satan was never even a consideration for me.

So, it is obvious not all human beings think this way but unfortunately many do…even many who claim to follow Jesus Christ, I have learned.

Here is what is in store for human beings who reject God's truth and live in disobedience against  God…

“ indignation and wrath,

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;   “

David said;

“ The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. “  Psalm 9:17

Because God has chosen the Jews and the fact that they are still God’s chosen people even to this day is why Paul said;

“ of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;   “

If you remember from my earlier study on the first chapter of the book of Romans we learned that Paul said;

“ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. “    Romans 1:16

Everything is to the Jews first.

The wrath of God is to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles - that is, those who do not obey God’s truth by putting their faith in Jesus Christ.

“ indignation and wrath,

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;   “

Blessings from God are to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles - that is, to those who obey God’s truth by believing in Jesus Christ.

“ But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:  “

I will continue with verse 11 in the next study.
