John 13:19-20 ( posted 10-19-14 )

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I amhe.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Let's continue.

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I amhe.

It is interesting that again Jesus said I am.

The Greek reads that Jesus again said “ ego eimi “ translated I am.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that when Jesus came to His disciples walking on Lake Galilee in the storm He told them “ I am.”

But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. “    John 6:20

What is translated It is I; , in the Greek actually reads again “ ego eimi “ - meaning,

I am “.

Being God, Jesus told Moses;

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. “    Exodus 3:14

Jesus told His disciples again later the same thing about telling them things ahead of time so that when it does happen they will remember and believe Him;

And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. “   John 14:29

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. John 16:4

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Jesus also said;

He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. “    Luke 10:16

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have doneitunto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have doneitunto me. “   Matthew 25:40

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye diditnot to one of the least of these, ye diditnot to me. “   Matthew 25:45

Obviously, the overall relationship is that believers in Jesus are connected to God through Jesus Christ His only begotten Son.

Those who are not believers in Jesus are not connected to God.

I will continue with verse 21 in the next study.

“  The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

Let's continue.

  The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. “

The Greek word “ emarturei “ translated “ bare record “ means charge, give evidence, give testimony, be well reported of. In other words, they verified with their own eyes what Jesus had done in raising Lazarus from the dead.

Whether these people later repented and continued to believe in Jesus we do not know but it is for certain even if they ended up in eternal hell they will always remember what they saw Jesus do.

For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The people that witnessed what Jesus had done spread the word to others. Obviously, the people that witnessed what Jesus had done were of good reputation in society and were believed at their own word what they said Jesus had done.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

The Greek word “ apelthen “ translated “ world is gone “ means quite similar in a way to the Greek word “ apostasy “ which means to depart, pass away, be past, follow behind, go away, go aside, go back.

These people the Jewish authorities were talking about were actually apostates to the religion of Judaism.

My friend, religions today still call their own who change their belief and follow other religions, apostates.

What the “ world “ in the eyes of the Jewish authorities was describing about the people who chose to follow Jesus after He raise Lazarus from the dead is what will happen today unfortunately with people who presently follow Jesus...some will go after someone or something else to put their faith in.

However, what was happening as the Jewish authorities described is what should be happening.

People need Jesus...especially today.

In contrast of today's news about the shopping mall that was attacked in Nairobi, notice that Jesus never taught those who follow Him to murder anyone who does not believe in Jesus.

This is the difference between hatred and love...having a conscience or lack of having one.

If you are someone who presently believes in Jesus always keep your faith in Him to the end of either your life or the world...whichever comes first.

The Lord bless you.

I will continue with verse 20 in the next study.

John 12:16 ( posted 9-10-13 )

These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

Let's continue.

These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified,...

Jesus was greatly humbled and was not glorified during His earthly life and ministry. Jesus was not glorified until His resurrection.

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)    John 7:37-39

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. “    Philippians 2:5-11

...then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

The Greek word “ ep “ translated “ of “ means, superimposed on. In other words, the things Jesus went through were stacked on top of Him.

Technically, the Greek reads - “ ...then they remembered that these things were on him having been written and these things they did to him. “

Notice that the writer John said;

...then remembered they that these things were written of him,”

It is interesting that they once knew and later forgot what the Scripture prophesied about Jesus, their Messiah.

I'm certain that all Jews once knew and even remembered later but still rejected Jesus out of hatred for Him.

This is one of the main reasons people in general reject Jesus today...hatred for Him.

However, in spite of this fact, many are coming to believe in Jesus still having a conscience, a good will, a repentant heart, having the desire to place their faith in Jesus.

I would love to have been with the 2 men on the road to Emmaus who Jesus taught from the Old Testament the things prophesied about Himself;

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?    Luke 24:27-32

My friend, the trend in society today is to believe all religious doctrines. This way nobody can be accused of being narrow minded.

Jesus is not the only one who claimed to be the only way to Heaven. Every religion historically once claimed to be the only way to Heaven. Some still do but with exceptions. The social trend today is to get away from the narrow mindedness of claiming to be the only way to Heaven and being more compatible.

Unfortunately this same trend is happening within evangelicalism – that is, people who profess or at least once professed to believe Jesus when He said;

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6

I have an evangelical friend who told me he believes that Jesus lied to us when He made this claim and that Jesus is rather one of many ways to Heaven.

God created us with the right to choose whoever or whatever we wish to believe.

In my lifetime I have known an abundance of people and presently know as many if not more than I have known my entire life.

I have observed that people who do not know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior have no peace about their present life, nor their future, especially concerning what will happen to them after death... no matter what their religion has taught them.

This is why many people commit suicide...no feeling of hope.

This is why many people turn to drugs, alcohol, and pornography...a temporary escape from reality.

Jesus gives assurance that everything will be okay when we die.

What is sad is that I personally know people who profess to believe in Jesus who are still like those who do not believe... without hope and have no peace.

My friend, faith is in the heart... not intellectual head knowledge.

This is why Paul said about the heart;

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. “   Romans 10:9-10

When we believe in Jesus from our heart and not from our brain, then Jesus saves us and gives us blessed assurance, peace and hope.

I will continue with verse 17 in the next study.

John 12:12-15 ( posted 8-27-13 )

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

Let's continue.

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, “

If you remember in the verse of my last study we learned that many of the Jews at this time believed in Jesus because He raised Lazarus from the dead;

“   Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. “ John 12:11

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna “ means “ oh save! “ and is an exclamation of adoration.

What they shouted was in fulfillment of David's prophecy of this moment;

“  Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. “  Psalm 118:26

The Greek word “ eulogemenos “ translated “ Blessed “ is in the present tense meaning being blessed. In other words, these Jews were blessing Jesus with shouts of adoration.

Interestingly enough, the Greek word “ ekraugazon “ translated “ cried “ is similar to the  Greek word used when Jesus shouted for Lazarus to come out of the grave in our earlier study of John 11:43;

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

This is quite a contrast to their cursing Him later when He died;

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.   Matthew 27:24-25

Another interesting point is that at this moment they are proclaiming Jesus to be King of Israel.

This declaration of Jesus is similar to what the Jewish priest said about Jesus when he suddenly prophesied about Jesus.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that Caiaphas, the high priest at this particular time prophesied about Jesus;

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

And one of them, named
Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.   John 11:47-53

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

This is in partial fulfillment of Zechariah's prophecy;

  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:9-10

The other half of Zechariah's prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.

My friend, Jesus' Kingdom is both spiritual and tangible and will be visibly seen by all.

As a matter of fact, Jesus' future earthly Kingdom will be just as tangible and real as the blood of those who fight against Jesus in trying to stop Him – not to mention the the realness of their blood that is splattered on Jesus while Jesus makes war against them;

And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. “ Revelation 14:20

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. “   Isaiah 63: 1-4

This future coming of Jesus to the earth will be quite different from the humble and lowly coming of Jesus that we are presently studying.

I will continue with verse 16 in the next study.

John 12:9-11 ( posted 8-20-13 )

  Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

  Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

Let's continue.

  Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. “

The Greek word “ polus “ translated “ Much “ referring to the amount of people means mostly, many, great, much, largely, plenteous, abundant.

This is interesting.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where Jesus was, they had to report it so the Pharisees could arrest Him.

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.   John 11:57

However, according to what John said most of the Jews knew where Jesus was and went to see Him and Lazarus.

Not all hated Jesus at this time.

They knew Jesus was going around doing miracles and they knew He could do a miracle for them and their loved ones.

Even though Jesus said He was only sent to the Jews;

But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matthew 15:24

Jesus did give in and did miracles for Gentiles because of their faith in Him.

As long as anyone believed and even had trouble believing, Jesus freely did miracles for many people.

Lazarus was obviously quite popular in his day. Most people knew him as well as they did Jesus.

But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; “

Word obviously got to the Pharisees where Jesus was located.

Now, they considered murdering Lazarus also.

The Greek word “ apokteinosin “ translated “ they might put to death “ means literally cold blooded murder...with absolutely no judicial law involved.

Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. “

The Pharisees were jealous of the Lord Jesus Christ.

They knew many of the Jews were putting their faith in Jesus.

So they were considering murdering Jesus and Lazarus both.

While we must acknowledge where these murderers are today according to Jesus, unless they too repented and put their faith in Jesus before they physically died, we cannot be too angry about this conscienceless behavior.

There is a warning for those of us as well, those of us who claim to believe in Jesus Christ.

John said clearly;

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. “ 1 John 2:9

But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. “  1 John 2:11

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. “   1 John 3:15

“  If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? “ 1 John 4:20

The one that really gets my attention is this statement of John;

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. “   1 John 3:15

Someone once said - “ It is easy to hate.”

That is true. What takes effort is to forgive and love.

And my friend, forgiving is not merely an option for us who follow Jesus.

Jesus clearly said;

  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15

While many of the Jews and Gentiles did believe in Jesus, many of them departed the faith.

Paul said only a remnant of Israel will make it to Heaven.

Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: “  Romans 9:27

The Greek word “ hupoleimma “ translated “ remnant “ means a few.

My friend, Jesus said the same thing about humanity in general;

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wideisthe gate, and broadisthe way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Because straitisthe gate, and narrowisthe way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:13-14

This is another reason the world hates Jesus.

The world disagrees with Jesus on the numbers of those who will make it to Heaven.

According to the world, most people, if not all, will make it to Heaven... ultimately.

According to Jesus, most people will end up in eternal hell...not Heaven.

And what is sad is that many of us who believe in Jesus will depart from the faith before Jesus returns.

We can choose who we want to believe...the world or Jesus.

I believe Jesus and will continue to.

I hope you will too.

I will continue with verse 12 in the next study.

John 12:7-8 ( posted 8-8-13 )

Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Let's continue.

Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

This is interesting.

According to Jesus, Mary kept the ointment for this moment to commemorate the death and burial of Jesus.

Jesus spoke often of His death and resurrection.

While His disciples missed this point in Jesus' teachings, Mary seemed to remember and understand this was soon to happen.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that Martha knew of this too;

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. “   John 11:25-27

Notice that Martha did not oppose what Mary was doing...except that she needed help in the kitchen;

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.   Luke 10:38-42

Jesus publicly declared that what Mary was doing was in connection to His death.

Mary knew this in her heart.

Some people knew and believed why Jesus came to earth.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that Jesus said that Abraham rejoiced in this fact;

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he sawit,and was glad.

Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.    John 8:56-58

The reason Abraham rejoiced was because he knew that the death and resurrection of Jesus would mean his salvation.

For the poor always ye have with you;...

Most people believe the myth that God created poor people to be poor and created the rich to be rich.

This is generally based on the wrongly interpreted verse in the Bible that says;

The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.  “   Proverbs 22:2

What Solomon said was the fact that God created all people. He did not create people to be in the condition they are in.

People reject verses in the Bible that plainly teach our condition in life is a choice we made for ourselves;

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.    Proverbs 28:13

“  Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. “ Proverbs 19:15

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.    Proverbs 20:13

“  For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.  For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.  Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. “ 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

The standard of rich and poor as society observes it to be obviously varies throughout the world, dependoing on the local economy.

It is interesting that even who is considered to be a world standard economically poor person is considered rich in God's eyes if he or she believes in Jesus Christ.

but me ye have not always.

Mary knew that Jesus was not only going to die and be resurrected but she also knew that He was going to ascend back to Heaven from which He came and that He would not be presently visible with them anymore.

I will continue with verse 9 in the next study.
