John 13:19-20 ( posted 10-19-14 )

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I amhe.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Let's continue.

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I amhe.

It is interesting that again Jesus said I am.

The Greek reads that Jesus again said “ ego eimi “ translated I am.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that when Jesus came to His disciples walking on Lake Galilee in the storm He told them “ I am.”

But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. “    John 6:20

What is translated It is I; , in the Greek actually reads again “ ego eimi “ - meaning,

I am “.

Being God, Jesus told Moses;

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. “    Exodus 3:14

Jesus told His disciples again later the same thing about telling them things ahead of time so that when it does happen they will remember and believe Him;

And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. “   John 14:29

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. John 16:4

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Jesus also said;

He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. “    Luke 10:16

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have doneitunto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have doneitunto me. “   Matthew 25:40

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye diditnot to one of the least of these, ye diditnot to me. “   Matthew 25:45

Obviously, the overall relationship is that believers in Jesus are connected to God through Jesus Christ His only begotten Son.

Those who are not believers in Jesus are not connected to God.

I will continue with verse 21 in the next study.

John 12:38-41 ( posted 2-25-14 )

That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Let's continue.

Even though Jesus did all those miracles and works as we learned in the previous study, many of the Jews still did not believe in Jesus.

John was not implying that God kept them from believing or being able to believe in Jesus.

The Greek word “ edunanto “ translated “ could not “ in verse 39 also implies the possible willful act of choice – in other words, a can do situation.

The point is, God did not force the Jews to not believe.

This is not God's heart since He became a human being and died for them so that if they would only believe in Jesus they could escape eternal damnation in hell.

Paul said in Romans it was because of their choice of unbelief that God cut them off;

Well; because of unbelief they were broken off,...“  Romans 11:20

Fortunately for the Jews God did not permanently cut them off but if they choose to believe, He will take them back again;

And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. “   Romans 11:23

If you remember in my earlier study in the book of Romans ( if you are reading those Bible studies as well ) we learned that God turns people over to a reprobate mind if they choose not to believe and reject His Son Jesus.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Romans 1:28

God will eventually turn a person over to a mind void of judgment if they continue to reject Him. He will give up on them.

These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

This is interesting.

If you remember in my earlier study in the book of John, we learned that Abraham saw Jesus and knew who He is;

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he sawit,and was glad.

Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.“  John 8:56-58

Likewise, according to John who wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Isaiah also saw Jesus and knew who He is.

I will continue with verse 42 in the next study.

John 12:37 ( posted 2-4-14 )

But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

Let's continue.

But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: “

Keep in mind that John said near the end of his book;

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. “   John 20:30-31

and also said at the end of his book;

This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.    John 21:24-25

Jesus said this about His own miracles;

Believe me that Iamin the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. “   John 14:11

In my next study we will learn why the Jews had so much trouble believing in Jesus even though they witnessed the miracles He did.

However, the point in all this said about the miracles Jesus did tells us that signs and miracles are important in helping us to keep our faith in Jesus.

This is why Jesus made this statement;

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.“   Mark 16:17-18

What Jesus said is about those of us who believe in Him.

Keep in mind if those of us who follow Jesus never cast a demon out of anyone, it does not mean we are not saved.

Also, if we as followers of Jesus never speak in tongues it does not mean we are not saved.

Again, if we are bitten by a snake and physically die, it does not mean we are not saved.

By the way, this statement Jesus made about snakes does not mean He was promoting the practice of snake handling.

Only a fool would do this.

A good example of what Jesus meant is when Paul was bitten by a snake when he was putting wood in the fire;

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god. “  Acts 28:3-6

Also, if we accidentally drink poison and die, this does not mean we are not saved.

And again, if we have never prayed for anyone and they got healed, it does not mean we are not saved.

However, what it does mean, according to Jesus, is that we as followers of Jesus have no faith to produce signs and miracles, which is a crucial part of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Miracles and signs in our life as followers of Jesus is part of what draws attention to Jesus and Him being in us.

Remember what Paul said about speaking in tongues;

Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. “  1 Corinthians 14:22

If we do not have much faith we need to confess it to God and ask Him for help rather than hide behind the common evangelical myth that God controls everything and it is up to God if anything happens.

Which, by the way, according to the Holy Bible, the only time God is in control of a person's life and leading the steps of a righteous person is when he or she is humble and fully yielded to God and is actively seeking and desiring what God's will is and has turned from sin.

At least one person had the honesty to admit to Jesus he had trouble believing;

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. “   Mark 9:24

Unfortunately, we live in a time when followers of Jesus disregard signs and miracles. We believe enough to be saved but anything more is out of the picture.

Faith is rapidly diminishing.

This Jesus knows when He returns;

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? “   Luke 18:8

Jesus obviously placed high importance on signs and miracles in His ministry here on earth and hoped His followers would continue the trend.

I will continue with verse 38 in the next study.

John 12:34-36 ( posted 1-22-14 )

The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

I hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year's!

Let's continue.

The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: “

This could be referring to Psalm 110:4;

The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Also a reference to Isaiah 9:6-7;

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

And could also be referring to Daniel 7:13-14;

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? “

If you remember in my earlier study back in the first chapter of the book of John we learned that Jesus, the Son of God is also referred to as the Son of Man.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. John 1:51

The Old Testament referred to Jesus as the Son of Man.

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. “  Daniel 7:13

And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. “  Ezekiel 1:26

The reason for this is that God wants us to know that it is Him who became a man and died for us and His name is Jesus.

Jesus said;

I andmyFather are one.“  John 10:30

The Jews forgot the prophecies about the fact their Messiah was to suffer and die first...and then be resurrected.

Jesus knew that not everyone would believe in Him.

I will continue with verse 37 in the next study.

John 12:32-33 ( posted 12-5-13 )

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw allmenunto me.

This he said, signifying what death he should die.

Let's continue.

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth,

The Greek word “ hupsotho “ translated lifted up means in both the literal and figurative sense - exalt, elevate, lift up.

For Jesus, this is meant to be both physically when He was lifted up on the cross and to be glorified and exalted while He was on the cross.

This is why Paul said he glories in the cross;

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. “ Galatians 6:14

We must keep this understanding in the context of what John said in the verse of our study;

This he said, signifying what death he should die.

It is quite obvious the Romans had Jesus lay on the wooden beams of His cross while they nailed Him to it and then several soldiers propped the cross up with Jesus nailed to it and dropped the cross with Jesus nailed to it in a hole in the ground to keep the cross steady.

Can you imagine the pain in Jesus wrists and ankles from the jolt when His cross was dropped into the hole.

Even in all His agony, humiliation and shame, Jesus was glorified and exalted.

This moment is the focus of the entire world...past, present and future.

It is by this kind of death that Jesus was not only physically lifted up but Himself glorified and exalted in being lifted up for the world to see.

will draw allmenunto me.

Still, within the context of what John is telling us in the verse of our study;

This he said, signifying what death he should die.

we must realize that it is Jesus' death on the cross that draws everyone's attention.

Even today, both the saved and the unsaved find Jesus' death fascinating.

Jesus' death is on the conscience of every human being no matter if he or she believes in Jesus or not.

There will come a day when every human being will bow to Jesus, even if they did not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior in this earthly life.

Paul said;

That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. “    Philippians 2:10-11

For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. “   Romans 14:11

What Jesus said in the verse of our study;

will draw allmenunto me.

does not mean that everyone is automatically saved and going to Heaven nor does it mean that only selected ones are chosen to be saved and allowed to go to Heaven while the rest of humanity is chosen to be doomed to eternal hell.

The same Jesus who said;

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw allmenunto me.

also said that there will be more people go to eternal hell than will make it to Heaven.

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wideisthe gate, and broadisthe way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Because straitisthe gate, and narrowisthe way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:13-14

The Greek word “ pantas “ translated all grammatically also means anyone, whosoever, whatsoever, as many as.

John wrote in the book of Revelation;

And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. “ Revelation 22:17

Whosoever “ means whosoever.

Anyone can choose to believe in Jesus and whosoever will choose to believe in Jesus will never be denied.

My friend, as a member of the body of Christ, a child of God, an adopted joint heir of Christ, and eternal life dwelling within us when we came to believe in God's only begotten Son Jesus, we are entitled to miraculous things from God.

General Patton during World War 2 asked God for good weather and God answered his prayer by causing the skies to clear and stop snowing.

Now, if General Patton, being unsaved, not being a believer in God's only begotten Son Jesus and even thinking in his mind that he was Alexander the Great reincarnated could ask God for a favor and God responded, how much more will an actual born again believing child of God who believes in God's only begotten Son Jesus receive good things from God when we ask Him?

This is one of the many benefits of belonging to Christ and living our life to please Him.

John, the writer of the book of John we are studying said clearly in his later epistle;

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. “   1 John 3:21-22

I will continue with verse 34 in the next study.

John 12:31 ( posted 11-26-13 )

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Let's continue.

Now is the judgment of this world:

We will find that later in this chapter we are studying, Jesus clearly said;

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.John 12:47

At this moment Jesus inferred who will be the judge...referring to His Father;

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 12:48

Even though Jesus said;

Now in the verse of our study, keep in mind that a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day to the Lord;

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2 Peter 3:8

Nowcan be a very long time to us but to the Lord, almost immediate.

From the moment Jesus made this statement, in actuality the judgment of this world is at least ( though not limited to ) a two-fold process over a period of time consisting of more than 3007 years.

The signing of the 7 year peace treaty the “ antichrist “ brings the Jews and the Arabs to agreeing on in the future, commonly known among evangelicals as the 7 year tribulation period is referred to in the Holy Bible as the time of God's wrath. This is at least 2000 years from the time Jesus made this statement about this world's judgment being Now.

The next form of judgment is another 1000 years after this when God brings fire down from Heaven on the armies who once again gather around Jerusalem to destroy Jesus and the Jews...after satan is released from the abyss.

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. Revelation 20:7-9

The final judgment will be an undetermined length of time after this.

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:11-15

Again, keep in mind this final judgment will be at least 3007 years from the moment Jesus made this statement in the verse of our study.

now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

The Greek word “ archon “ translated prince means ruler, chief, magistrate, a first in rank or power.

Jesus said clearly about satan;

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. “   John 14:30

Paul called satan the god of this world;

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. “ 2 Corinthians 4:4

Once again, the now Jesus referred to in the verse of our study;

now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

will not happen to satan for at least 3007 years from the moment Jesus said this.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10

Satan as the “ god “ and “ prince “ of this present world still has the ability to deceive and to mislead.

However, because of the death of Jesus, for those of us who believe in Jesus, satan has no stronghold over us. His power has been broken.

Yes, He can deceive even those of us who believe in Jesus but he has no power over people who believe in Jesus.

I will continue with verse 32 in the next study.
