John 13:24-30 ( posted 11-24-14 )
“ Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dippedit. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. “
I will focus on certain verses.
“ And after the sop Satan entered into him. “
Luke also said that satan entered into Judas;
“ Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. “ Luke 22:3
If you remember in my earlier study in the book of Romans we learned that when a person is persistent in rejecting God's truth and chooses to do evil, even after having once believed the truth, sometimes God will turn them over to satan;
“ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; “ Romans 1:28
Keep in mind that Jesus just got through washing the feet of all His disciples, including Judas.
If you remember in my earlier studies we learned that Judas was chosen along with the other disciples;
“ Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? “ John 6:70
Judas was numbered among the 12 disciples and had his divinely appointed position;
“ For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. “ Acts 1:17
“ For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. “ Acts 1:20
“ That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. “ Acts 1:25
The Greek word “ parebe “ translated “ fell “ means to go contrary to. The word transgression was thrown in by the translators.
The point is, it wasn't Judas committing sin that caused him to lose his salvation and position of ministry, it was the fact he quit believing in Jesus and directed his faith to someone or something else.
Judas was once a believer and then chose to apostatize – that is, change his faith from Jesus to someone or something else.
Jesus and Paul said this will happen a lot in the last days... people who once believed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and then later decide to put their faith in someone or something else.
Since we are saved by grace through our faith, if we put our faith in someone or something else other than Jesus then we are no longer saved.
My friend, we must keep the faith to the end of our life in order to be saved.
Before Paul died he told Timothy he had kept the faith;
“ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: “ 2 Timothy 4:7
Always keep your faith in Jesus.
Love Him and trust Him for He is good.
The Lord bless you all.
I will continue with verse 31 in the next study.
