John 13:21-23 ( posted 11-6-14 )

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

 Let's continue.

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

The Greek word “ paradosei “ translated shall betray means to give over, cast, yield up, betray. It is not yielding to someone but rather yielding the person or object that once belonged to you over to someone or something else.

This is the same Greek word Jesus used when He said about those who believe in Him during the end time;

And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.“   Matthew 24:10

Truly, Judas did this.

And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.   John 18:2-3

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

The disciples could not imagine any one of them doing such a thing.

Peter had told Jesus he would die for Him;

But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day,evenin this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all. “  Mark 14:29-31

Notice the writer Mark said all the disciples said they would die with Jesus.

This included Judas as well... at this time.

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

The Greek word used in this statement “ egapa “ translated “ loved “ is the same kind of love God loves everyone with.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.“  John 3:16

Whatever reason the writer of the book of John in which we are studying emphasizes the love Jesus had for him as being identifiable among the 12 disciples, it was not because Jesus played favorites nor had He respect of persons.

For there is no respect of persons with God. “  Romans 2:11

And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. “  Ephesians 6:9

But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. “  Colossians 3:25

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. “  James 2:1

And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: “   1 Peter 1:17

It could be that John loved Jesus more than the other disciples because Jesus forgave him much.

Jesus clearly said;

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven,the sameloveth little. “  Luke 7:47

Not every believer and follower of Jesus has the same relationship with Jesus.

Jesus clearly said we are His friends only if we do what He says;

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. “  John 15:14

A Bible teacher once said - “ I'd hate to spend eternity with someone I did not love.”

My friend, if we are actively seeking God's will then that stands a pretty good chance our love is focused on Him... not ourselves and this world.

As followers and believers in Jesus, we should be like Paul who would have rather gone to be with the Lord;

For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: “   Philippians 1:23

It does not mean it will happen at that moment.

It is an attitude of the heart that is meant.

Jesus emphasized the importance of placing our heart where it should be no matter how long we live here on planet earth;

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. “    Matthew 6:19-21

We must make Jesus our focus and top priority.

This present life and the things we enjoy is only temporary.

Our life in Heaven and what we have there will be forever.

I will continue with verse 24 in the next study.
