John 12:28-30 ( posted 11-20-13 )

Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Let's continue.

Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. “

Keep in mind, according to the Holy Bible God became flesh, a man, and dwelt among us.

John, the writer of the book of John in which we are studying said;

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. “ John 1:14

John quoted John the Baptist having said this about Jesus;

John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. “ John 1:15

Notice that John the Baptist said this about Jesus;

for he was before me. “

John the Baptist knew that Jesus was the eternal God who became flesh and blood as a human being.

According to the Holy Bible, God is manifested in 3 persons, not 3 Gods.

God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and God the Son, Jesus all consist of only one God.

Jesus clearly said;

I andmyFather are one.“   John 10:30

As for John the Baptist's statement about Jesus being before him, Jesus confirmed this by saying;

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he sawit,and was glad.

Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:56-58

In actuality, since God as being only one God in 3 persons, just as Paul said a man and wife is one flesh but yet still 2 persons, God became His own Son in human flesh.

God as man – that is, as Jesus, set the example for other human beings to glorify God.

God the Father, even though being one in the same with Jesus the Son of God, responded to Jesus' praise to Him in the verse of our study by saying;

Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. “

There was another occasion when God the Father's voice came from a cloud and directed Jesus' disciples to focus their attention and faith toward Jesus...not anyone else;

Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. “ Matthew 17:4-5

The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. “

It is interesting that John mentioned the voices of 7 thunders in his book of Revelation;

And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. “   Revelation 10:3-4

Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Just like the voice from the cloud was for the good of Jesus' disciples so that they would direct their faith and attention toward Jesus, so this voice from Heaven likewise was for the good of those who heard it, so they would know the importance of Jesus and to put their faith and attention toward Him.

I will continue with verse 31 in the next study.
