John 12:12-15 ( posted 8-27-13 )

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

Let's continue.

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, “

If you remember in the verse of my last study we learned that many of the Jews at this time believed in Jesus because He raised Lazarus from the dead;

“   Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. “ John 12:11

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna “ means “ oh save! “ and is an exclamation of adoration.

What they shouted was in fulfillment of David's prophecy of this moment;

“  Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. “  Psalm 118:26

The Greek word “ eulogemenos “ translated “ Blessed “ is in the present tense meaning being blessed. In other words, these Jews were blessing Jesus with shouts of adoration.

Interestingly enough, the Greek word “ ekraugazon “ translated “ cried “ is similar to the  Greek word used when Jesus shouted for Lazarus to come out of the grave in our earlier study of John 11:43;

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

This is quite a contrast to their cursing Him later when He died;

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.   Matthew 27:24-25

Another interesting point is that at this moment they are proclaiming Jesus to be King of Israel.

This declaration of Jesus is similar to what the Jewish priest said about Jesus when he suddenly prophesied about Jesus.

If you remember in my earlier study we learned that Caiaphas, the high priest at this particular time prophesied about Jesus;

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

And one of them, named
Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.   John 11:47-53

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

This is in partial fulfillment of Zechariah's prophecy;

  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:9-10

The other half of Zechariah's prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.

My friend, Jesus' Kingdom is both spiritual and tangible and will be visibly seen by all.

As a matter of fact, Jesus' future earthly Kingdom will be just as tangible and real as the blood of those who fight against Jesus in trying to stop Him – not to mention the the realness of their blood that is splattered on Jesus while Jesus makes war against them;

And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. “ Revelation 14:20

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. “   Isaiah 63: 1-4

This future coming of Jesus to the earth will be quite different from the humble and lowly coming of Jesus that we are presently studying.

I will continue with verse 16 in the next study.
