John 11:54-55 ( posted 6-27-13 )

“  Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. “

Let’s continue.

“  Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Ephraim was about 20 miles north of Jerusalem. Jesus stayed there about 2 months until  the Passover.

The raising of Lazarus was Jesus’ last great miracle which the Sanhedrin acted upon, having a meeting to decide what to do with Jesus.

“ And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. “

If you remember from my earlier study on John 2:13;

“ And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,  “

what was once “ The Lord’s passover “ -

“  And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover. “   Exodus 12:11

traditionally became “ the Jews’ passover “.

Also, what was once “ the feasts of the Lord “;

“ Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.“  Leviticus 23:2

traditionally became “ the feasts of the Jews “ -

“   After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. “  John 5:1

“ Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. “   John 7:2

These events became a cultural tradition that literally had nothing to do with God.

According to Josephus, about a quarter of a million animals were sacrificed at the passovers. Priests sold licenses which brought in much revenue.

If you remember from my earlier study this is what Jesus saw when He went into the temple;

“ And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: “   John 2:13-14

The ritual of purification was taken from Numbers 9:6-10;

“ And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day:

And those men said unto him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: wherefore are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the LORD in his appointed season among the children of Israel?

And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto the LORD. “

Always keep your faith in Jesus and Him alone.

I will continue with verse 56 in the next study.
