Today's Bible Verse Rom 6:13 - 23

Do not yield your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but yield yourselves to God, as one alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace.
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under grace? Let it not be!
Do you not know that to whom you yield yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to him whom you obey; whether it is of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness.
But thanks be to our God that you were the slaves of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
Then being made free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness.
I speak in the manner of men because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you have yielded your members as slaves to uncleanness, and to lawless act unto lawless act, even so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness unto holiness.
For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.
What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
But now, being made free from sin, and having become slaves to God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end everlasting life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pumpkin Pie with Spiced Meringue Topping

Recipe courtesy Sandra Lee
cook time 50 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 (9-inch) deep-dish frozen
pie crust - 4 ounces cream cheese
, softened at room temperature - 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- Pinch salt

- 1 egg, plus 2 yolks, whites reserved for meringue topping
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

- 1/4 cup milk

For Spiced Meringue Topping:
- 2 large reserved egg whites, at room temperature
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Put the frozen pie crust onto a baking sheet.
Using a hand mixer beat the cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Add the pumpkin and beat to combine. Add the sugars, salt, egg, egg yolks, spice and mix well. Stir in the milk and beat and until well incorporated and smooth. Pour the mixture into the pie crust and bake until set, about 40 to 50 minutes. Allow the pie to come to room temperature.
For Meringue:
Using a hand mixer beat the egg whites in a very clean glass or stainless steel bowl on high. When the whites are very foamy, begin to stream in about 1/2 of the sugar. Beat until soft peaks form and stream in remaining sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Beat until stiff peaks form. (When the beaters are lifted out of the bowl peaks should remain standing.)
Increase the oven temperature to broil. Using a spatula cover the top of the pie completely with the meringue, making decorative peaks in the meringue. Put the pie back in the oven and broil until the peaks of meringue are golden brown, about 5 minutes.
Remove from the oven and serve.

#2: Book of John
John 10:15 ( posted 1-26-12 )
“ As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. “
Let me say this concerning my previous study while it is on my mind - when the Bible warns against a pastor who “ scatters “ God’s sheep, this scattering of God’s sheep is not restricted to a church split, dividing a church congregation against itself or causing church attenders to leave a church. When I was a teenager I personally attended a church that resulted in a split…half the congregation got up and walked out. But this split was not over doctrinal issues.
Scattering God’s sheep has to do with church pastoral led and promoted spiritual decline even to the point of spiritual destruction by pastors willingly compromising the gospel of Jesus Christ, willfully changing the gospel of Jesus Christ to satisfy the lust of the “ itching ears “ of people who insatiably seek only what they want to hear in church sermons in today’s hard economic times, searching for pastors who willingly preach “ another gospel “, enticing church attenders to believe this “ other gospel “ rather than believe the true, one and only gospel of Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately here in America today, people generally do not seek for or even want to hear Biblical truth…only the fantasy of “ another gospel.”
Paul said to the Galatians;
“ I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. “ Galatians 1:6-8
It is interesting to me that Paul included himself in this warning;
“ But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you “
In other words, just as Peter who walked and lived with Jesus Christ for 3 years and listened to Jesus’ teaching and saw His miracles, left the gospel of Jesus Christ and returned to the Law, Paul knew it could just as easily happen to him.
And my friend, if it happened to Peter, Barnabas, and many followers of Jesus back in the first century, it for sure can and will happen to many of us in today’s modern 21st century.
A church leader will scatter God’s sheep by compromising the gospel of Jesus Christ, changing the gospel of Jesus Christ, and willfully rejecting Bible verses that is deemed to be offensive in today’s modern evangelical society or is not considered good for business - that is, considered not to be encouraging enough by today’s standards to draw large crowds, especially in today’s troubled economic times.
My friend, if you care about the truth in the Holy Bible, stay with it, even if it is sometimes rough, cutting to the quick, and cage rattling.
The Holy Bible offers encouragement, hope and something to look forward to, but it also warns of the result of wrong doing, disobedience and lack of faith…especially for born again christian followers of Jesus Christ.
I would suggest that you reject a church pastor who leaves out of his sermons the Biblical truth of judgment, the Biblical truth of apostasy, the Biblical truth of reaping what we sow both good and bad, and the Biblical truth that born again christians will be judged for both the good and the bad we have done in this earthly body when we stand before Jesus Christ at the judgment seat of Christ!
The problem here in America is that no evangelical wants to hear these Biblical truths of the Bible they claim to believe in…only the positive verses that they want to hear.
There is no conviction in evangelicalism since the Holy Spirit is not allowed to convict anyone in evangelical church services nowadays.
We cannot be of “ the faith “ and only believe bits and pieces of it…what we only want to believe.
Let’s continue.
“ As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: “
Jesus said in His prayer to the Father;
“ And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. “ John 17:3
According to Jesus, eternal life is knowing God. The only way to know God is through Jesus His Son.
Jesus clearly said;
“ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. “ John 14:6
We either believe Jesus when He said this or we don’t.
It is our choice.
No one can force us to believe this.
Jesus claimed to be with God the Father even before the world was created;
“ And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. “ John 17:5
Jesus even made this declaration;
“ I and my Father are one. “ John 10:30
“ and I lay down my life for the sheep. “
I know Jesus was murdered by evil people that just hated Him because of Him being Him.
Yes, there are human beings that are that perverted…and sick mindedly glory in their perversion.
However, Jesus made it clear to us that technically nobody took His life from Him.
Jesus declared that He willfully gave His life in death both in this statement in the verse of our study and in another place, which we will get to soon in our study of the book of John;
“ Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. “ John 10:17-18
Now listen up!
You can believe what you want but here is what the Holy Bible teaches about God.
God is one God…but somehow our one God is in 3 persons.
Jesus who is God came to earth and became a human being in the most literal sense, even becoming the flesh, blood and bones with soul, spirit and body as any human being has.
Through this part of God’s existence, as a human being Jesus became obedient unto God His Father, even obedient to the death on the cross.
Through His sacrificial death that God put Himself through in being His own Son Jesus for us, He became His own pleasing sacrifice and payment for the sins we as human beings commit.
This is why God’s only plan for our salvation is through His only begotten Son Jesus because through Jesus as God is God’s only way of justifying us enough to be able to enter Heaven when we physically die…but only in response to us resting our inner faith in Jesus as God’s Son, the only way to Heaven.
My friend, Jesus is incredible! He boggles my mind!
I will continue with verse 16 in the next study.

John 10:2-14 ( posted 1-18-12 )
“ But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. “
For those of you who are new to my Bible study, I welcome you to read my series on Bible prophecy.
So far, I have completed seventeen parts.
The texts are entitled Revelation - Part One and so forth, through Revelation - Part Seventeen.
Enjoy!
Let’s continue.
Keep in mind that the Greek word “ thuras “ translated “ door “ can also be translated gate, entrance and portal. It means the same thing.
The Greek word “ thuroros “ translated “ porter “ means a gate warden, a watcher.
The Greek text reads -
“ but the one entering through the door shepherd is of the sheep.
To this one the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep the voice of him hears, and his own sheep he calls by name and leads out them.
When his own all he puts forth, in front of them he goes, and the sheep him follows, because they know the voice of him; ”
Obviously, according to the verse of our last study;
“ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “ John 10:1
Jesus is telling us is a person who is not of “ the faith.”
Jesus interestingly seems for the moment to refer to pastors and shepherds of His flock in His next statement;
“ But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. “ John 10:2
According to God’s own rule, these pastors and shepherds Jesus refers to in verse 2 are appointed by God.
“ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: “ Ephesians 4:11-12
Since it requires entering through Jesus as the “ door “ to be saved and to be of “ the faith “, some of those who enter are appointed to certain positions within the body of Christ…including being a pastor and/or shepherd.
However, starting with verse 3 through verse 11, Jesus refers to only Himself.
In the verses of our study Jesus claims to be the porter and the voice that His sheep recognize;
“ To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.“ John 10:3-5
Jesus reaffirms this later by saying;
“ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: “ John 10:27
Jesus claims to be the door and the Savior of our soul;
“ I am the door of the sheep: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. “ John 10:9
Jesus claims to be the good shepherd;
“ I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. “ John 10:11
Starting in verse 12 Jesus refers to pastors and shepherds as hired hands.
“ But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. “ John 10:12-13
The Greek words “ ouk on poimen “ translated “ not the shepherd, “ means not being the shepherd.
In other words, not shepherding the flock as they should.
Jesus states a fact that is contrary to the philosophy of ministry in today’s modern evangelical society.
Jesus said clearly;
“ whose own the sheep are not, “
Notice that Jesus said a flake pastor will scatter His sheep when trouble comes;
“ seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. “ John 10:12
Jeremiah even warned pastors who scatter God’s sheep;
“ Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD. “ Jeremiah 23:1-2
Isaiah did not have kind words about pastors and shepherds of God’s people;
“ His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. “ Isaiah 56:10-11
Wow! What would Isaiah say in today’s modern evangelical society!
My friend, listen up!
Jesus clearly is saying that He is the good shepherd to those of us who are His sheep.
Church leaders are hired hands that are like employees of any company…they can change in a heartbeat and lead people astray...doctrinally. Not all, but many of them are as fickle as the wind when it comes to what they believe and teach.
Unfortunately, people worship a church pastor as if he or she is some kind of a god.
I personally know people who do.
I personally know people who call their church pastor " father "...something Jesus clearly warned against!
Jesus said clearly;
" But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and ye are all brethren.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in Heaven.
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. " Matthew 23:8-10
While God does appoint church leaders, they are not to be worshiped as a god…nor are they to be the object of our faith. We do not put our inner faith in church leaders.
Our faith is to be put in Jesus Christ.
He is the good shepherd of our soul.
He is the door and the porter who opens the door to anyone who enters and is the only One who can save us from our sins.
I will continue with verse 15 in the next study.

John 2:1-5
**********Note from Wayne***************
I came across another Bible study I did years ago...the first 5 verses of John chapter 2.
Enjoy!
Wayne Brown
“ And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. “
Let’s continue.
“ And the third day “
This probably means the third day after Jesus began His ministry.
As we recall, various Jews were sent to inquire of John the Baptist who he is.
Then the next day after this John the Baptist sees Jesus and declares;
“ Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. “ John 1:29
This was the day John the Baptist saw the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus as confirmation from God which person is the Messiah he was sent to announce to the people.
On this day Jesus had not begun His actual ministry as of yet.
It was the next day that would be counted as Day one when John the Baptist,
this time with 2 of his disciples said again;
“ Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. “ John 1:36-37
As we recall these 2 disciples were John, the writer of this book we are studying, and
Andrew, the brother of Peter.
In turn Andrew brings his brother Peter to Jesus.
This is when Jesus actually began His ministry.
Day 2 Jesus left the Jordan area excitedly to find Philip and then Philip in turn brings Nathanael to Jesus.
Let us remember that these Jews believed without question that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the Son of God, the Lamb of God. As with us today however, these disciple’s faith was later challenged by circumstances that were so depressing that some of them began to question if Jesus was the Messiah or not.
We must not kid ourselves… if this could happen to these men who walked with Jesus for 3 years and heard Him speak and witnessed the miracles He performed abundantly from day to day for 3 years, then our faith today can certainly be challenged as well, as Jesus already told us it would.
Mark later said;
“ Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. “ Mark 16:14
Always remember, our inheritance of eternal salvation in heaven hinges on our continuance in “ the faith “.
This is one reason Paul warns us to examine ourselves to see if we are in “ the faith “.
If we think because we were once saved that we can live like the world in the pleasures of sin and still keep our inner faith in “ the faith “, then we better think twice.
“ there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. “
Day 3 Jesus and His disciples were invited to a wedding festival, which sometimes lasted a week back then.
Jesus’ mother was there and she was concerned about the fact they had no wine.
The Greek word “oinou” translated “wine” can be interpreted to mean either unfermented or fermented juice from the grape meaning either no alcohol in the juice or could have alcohol in the juice.
One Bible commentator who does not believe this wine was fermented expresses the idea that the meaning of the word “oinou” has to be interpreted within the context of moral circumstances.
To say that the “wine” in this particular wedding festival was non-alcoholic is only conjecture.
“ Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. “
Notice Jesus calls His mother “woman”.
Many people have a problem with Jesus calling His mother “woman”. In their minds they cannot imagine salvation without Jesus’ mother involved.
Jesus might have called her " woman " to show that she is not to be as revered as many people make her up to be.
On one occasion when people were telling Jesus that His mother and family wanted Him He said;
“ And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother. “ Mark 3:33-35
Many people cannot associate salvation with Jesus alone because according to their doctrine Mary the mother of Jesus is also required for salvation. As a matter of fact according to many people, Mary became God, making her greater than her Son Jesus, in being what they call the “ mother of God “.
Jesus knew in the future there would be people that would come about who would put emphasis on His mother that would make Him alone not sufficient for salvation.
When Jesus said He is the only way to Heaven, He did not say He and His mother.
He meant only Himself as being the only way to Heaven.
“ mine hour is not yet come. “
It is not sure what Jesus was referring to here about His hour has not yet come. He was already beginning His ministry having started the process of organizing His disciples.
“ His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. “
These were Mary’s last recorded words. She knew in her heart that Jesus is special and told the people to obey Him, and to do whatever He said.
Even Mary knew that Jesus has the words of eternal life. It is too bad most people since then do not believe like Mary did. She knew Jesus is enough for salvation.
It is sad that most human beings refuse to believe Jesus is enough for salvation.
People who add anyone or anything to Jesus as a requirement to be saved and in order to make it to Heaven...are not saved and on their way to Heaven, according to Jesus!
I will continue with verse 6 in the next study.

“ And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.
And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew
the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when
men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. “
Let’s continue.
As you recall in our last study of verses 1-5 we learned that Jesus’ mother Mary knew how important her Son is and knew He could bail them out of a predicament at this wedding feast.
We also saw that Jesus shows Mary His mother no preferential treatment just because she is His mother.
We should learn from this.
Rather, Jesus said His true “family” is anyone who does the will of the Father in Heaven.
“ And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying
of the Jews, “
The Greek word “ katharismon” translated “purifying” means a ceremony of cleansing
or washing before and after meals as a custom of the Jews.
The 6 water pots were probably used to wash hands before eating.
“containing two or three firkins apiece. “
The Greek word “metretes” translated “firkins” means measures and actually in the Greek reads - “metretes duo e treis” meaning in English…measures 2 or 3.
“ Metretes “ is a measurer which is a species of measure used for liquids, containing 72 sextarii or slightly less than 9 gallons. These 6 water pots each would hold about 9 gallons of water.
It is interesting that Jesus used the very pots the Jews used for washing their hands before
eating in their ‘cleansing ceremony’, that might have been a type of religious observance
as well for the wine He was about to create that they would be drinking from.
I’m not sure if Jesus meant anything by doing it this way or not but to me it is interesting that He would use the same water pots.
“Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. “
These people knew something unique was about to happen but probably not sure what, so they took advantage of the situation and filled those pots to the top.
If I had been there, I would have done the same.
“And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.
And they bare it. “
Can you imagine what was going through the heads of these people just after pouring ordinary water in these pots and Jesus telling them to serve it to the governor to drink? This was water from the pots they used for washing hands.
“When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not
whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew the governor of the
feast called the bridegroom,
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and
when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good
wine until now. “
When Jesus turned the water into wine is not for sure because by the time it reached
the mouth of the governor of the feast it was for sure wine.
The Greek word “methusthosin” translated “ have well drunk ” means intoxicated, drunken.
While there are Bible commentators who will try to tell you that the Greek word “methusko” has 2 meanings - one being to become drunk and the other to be satisfied from drinking without being intoxicated… this is not true. There are not 2 meanings for the Greek word “methusko”.
The actual form usage of “ methusko “ in this verse being “methusthosin” actually means to become drunken and intoxicated.
There are not 2 meanings for the Greek word “oinou” either.
“and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;)"
The people who took the water to the governor knew Jesus was the one who turned the water into wine and when... the exact moment He did, since they were carrying it.
“ This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; "
The Greek word “ semeion” translated “miracles” means signs.
The Greek phrase “archen ton semeion” actually means beginning of 'the signs'.
What is meant here in this verse is that Jesus began on this day in Cana to confirm His being sent by God with 'the signs', this being the first sign.
The Bible says this was Jesus’ first sign or miracle.
“and his disciples believed on him. “
Again Jesus’ disciples put their faith in Him.
If you are a born again believer, which means you are an adopted son or daughter of God by faith, be happy for this.
The world is searching for happiness.
If you are born again into the family of God you will know in your heart what your purpose for living is. You do not need to go out and spend $24.95 on a book to tell you what your purpose for being here is.
A person who does not know Jesus might buy such a book, along with all the other self-help books that are out there but a born again christian who is saved should already know in his or her heart what the purpose for being here is.
One can find answers in the book known as the Holy Bible and in having a one on one relationship with Jesus.
If you have a personal relationship with Jesus you will know that your relationship with Jesus is the purpose of existence.
My dad would say…” Life’s the pits and then you die. “ It does not have to be that way but I certainly understand what he meant. LOL
Jesus even said that life has its daily hardships and we should take each day at a time because there are enough troubles in one day, we don’t need to add to it by worrying about tomorrow.
This present life with all its troubles will help us appreciate Heaven all the more when we get there.
I cannot imagine not having Jesus in my life. I was saved at a very young age and I guess
because of this I never needed to know what my purpose driven life was all about. I just never needed to know what my purpose in life was because I knew Jesus and knew He lived in my heart from the moment I knelt at the altar in church and prayed and felt Him come inside me and He was as real as holding my wife in my arms and feeling her love and that was enough for me just in knowing this. I did not need to know anything else. I never lived a perfect sinless life but because I was born again and Jesus lived inside me I never felt lost, not knowing what on earth I was here for and where I was headed and never needed to know what my purpose of existence is.
I was saved when I was a child and lived with one foot in Heaven and the other in the world much of my life. No matter how sinful I became though, I never renounced my faith in Jesus.
But I also knew that I could not keep that up for too long because a born again christian
living in sin and 'keeping the faith' is not a good mixture. Something will have to eventually change…either he will come to repentance and change his lifestyle or he will change his faith and follow other gods. Sometimes I would go to the nightclubs on Saturday night and then go to church the very next morning.
This is why I teach so much against a born again christian living in sin and come against sin in the church so much because all those wasted years I was living without
God’s best for me. God will not fully bless us if we are living in disobedience unto Him. It is hard to live in faith when we are living in disobedience… it just doesn’t work. Answers to prayer are hindered when our heart is not right with God.
He is tolerant, patient and loving yes, but He will not give us His best in our life if we choose to live in sin.
Most born again christians turn to books other than the Bible to find answers. Their relationship with the Lord has grown cold and the Bible is no longer enough for them…nor is Jesus enough for them anymore.
They feel like the Lord is not listening to them anymore but the truth is they are the ones who have left their “ first love “ which was Jesus, when they first got saved.
The Bible is not enough anymore for these christians who have grown cold.
But if you are saved and not habitually practicing sin as a lifestyle, then you can have confidence in taking life by the tail and living life to its fullest, not as the world teaches living life to its fullest but as the Bible teaches it.
Jesus said He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly.
When we pray we can have confidence that God will hear us and give us the desires of our heart if our heart is clean before Him and if our heart does not condemn us.
As a child of God we have authority over satan even though he is the god of this world.
Greater is He who is in us than he that is in the world…remember this verse?
We do not have to live in defeat over worrying about losing our job. Someday we will be our employer’s boss.
Jesus promised this!
And until then Jesus will take care of His own.
We always knew our parents would take care of us when we were kids and I hope your childhood was as good as mine. I always knew mom and dad would come through.
We can have this same comfort with our Lord, knowing He will always come through. Never in my life has the Lord failed to come through for me.
While I was a fool He was wise. I reaped for my sinful lifestyle yes, but I never skipped a meal, never had to sleep out on the streets, and always had clothes.
He never let me win the lottery all the times I asked Him to help me and for obvious reasons, but He always met my needs and He still does.
If our heart is clean before Him and does not condemn us, He will do more for us than meet our daily needs.
Jesus promised us that the miracles He did we can do and can do more.
I will continue with verse 12 in the next study.

John 10:1 ( posted 8-15-11 )
“ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “
Let’s continue.
“ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “
To understand this parable we must stay with the focus of attention Jesus is drawing us to…which happens to be Himself.
The “ door “ Jesus refers to here He later declares to be Himself.
“ I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. “ John 10:9
The “ sheepfold, “ is quite obviously those who follow Jesus.
Jesus often refers to people who follow Him as sheep.
“ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: “ John 10:27
So, Jesus is presenting Himself as not only the “ door “ but also as the Shepherd of His sheep.
Peter said;
“ For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. “ 1 Peter 2:25
The Greek word “ poimen “ often translated “ shepherd “ can be translated either as pastor or shepherd and is understood as both in the same in the religious realm.
As Paul describes the position of a church leader as a pastor appointed by God;
“ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; “ Ephesians 4:11
Jesus describes the person in this position in this parable as a hired employee;
The Greek word “ misthotos “ translated “ hireling “ means wage worker, hired servant and can be referred to either in a good or bad sense.
In reality, in a sense we as followers of Jesus Christ are all wage workers.
Jesus clearly said;
“ When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. “ Luke 14:12-14
Jesus also described the Kingdom of God as in the sense of conducting business with those of us who follow Him;
“ For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. “ Matthew 20:1-16
Continuing on with the verse of our study today…
“ but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “
Here, Jesus admits there will be people who will try to get into Heaven any way other than through Jesus Himself.
Jesus said;
“ And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. “ Matthew 11:12
“ The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. “ Luke 16:16
The Greek word “ biazetai “ translated “ presseth “ means the same as in Matthew 11:12, to force violently.
What Jesus is getting at in all this is that people who will not believe Him to be the only way to Heaven and will rather choose to attempt to go to Heaven through their own means - that is, believing anyone or anything but Jesus, according to Jesus is an act of violence.
Attempting to enter Heaven by any means other than Jesus, Jesus describes this as a violent attempt to enter Heaven.
In other words, anything outside of Jesus as a means for a person to enter Heaven, any faith or belief other than in Jesus for a person as a means to enter Heaven, this person is considered by Jesus to be;
“ the same is a thief and a robber. “
Yes, Jesus Himself said;
“ but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. “
Paul stays with this teaching of Jesus by saying;
“ And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. “ 2 Timothy 2:5
To sum all this up, everyone wants to go to Heaven. Everyone has his or her own plan how to get to Heaven after physical death.
One man wanted his shotgun to be buried with him in his casket after he died.
His reasoning behind this was…” If saint Peter does not let me into Heaven, I'll blast my way in. “
But believing Jesus and His claim to be the only way to Heaven, like this man and his shotgun, most people will not do.
This is why Jesus said;
“ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. “ Matthew 7:13-14
I will continue with verse 2 in the next study.

#3: Book Of Romans
Romans 2:21-22 ( posted 2-3-12 )
“ Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? “
Let’s continue.
This statement Paul makes is the point in all this.
“ Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? “
While Paul was leading up to this, listing all their claims to be experts in spiritual instruction, he now turns it back on them, pointing out their hypocrisy.
The main reason Paul points out their hypocrisy is because of the fact that like Peter, Barnabas, the church in Galatia, and other followers of Jesus who went back to living under the Law living in hypocrisy, so did these Roman followers of Jesus.
In making this statement Paul was not criticizing them or anyone else who teaches against sin. Many evangelical church leaders today who condone sin, even using God’s grace as a copout excuse for living in sin, the myth that “God controls everything” also used as a copout excuse for living in sin and refusing to take responsibility for one’s own actions.
Just a reminder to those of you who have been reading me since 2005, as I said then I still say today, what I say to you I say to myself as well.
The things I say is from firsthand experience in knowing people, working side by side with people and talking to them on a one on one basis.
Paul gets down to brass tacks when he plainly says;
“ thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? “
Interestingly, Paul had to say to the born again christians at the church at Ephesus;
“ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. “ Ephesians 4:28
While stealing is quite obvious a sin, it is the next 2 sins that I want to discuss.
Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? “
This is an interesting sin;
“ adultery ”
It comes in 5 categories and all are for sure sin…according to the Holy Bible.
1.) Adultery is sex outside of marriage.
Ezekiel said;
“ But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband! “ Ezekiel 16:32
2.) Adultery is the result for a spouse who is divorced for any reason except for fornication.
Jesus said;
“ But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery:…“ Matthew 5:32
3.) Adultery is the result of anyone marrying a divorced person.
Jesus said;
“ …and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. “ Matthew 5:32
4.) Adultery is when a spouse divorces the other and marries another person.
Jesus said;
“ Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. “ Mark 10:11-12
Now here is the big one that most evangelicals choose to ignore.
5.) Adultery is lusting after someone.
Jesus said;
“ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. “ Matthew 5:27:28
So my friend, just as Paul pointed out the hypocrisy in these Roman followers of Jesus in teaching from the Law against sin but yet they themselves committing the same sin, don’t be condemning divorced people, excommunicating them from fellowship, looking down your nose at them as if a divorced person committed the unpardonable sin which it is not the unpardonable sin ( only blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin according to Jesus ), when you lust after women upon looking at a woman, which is as much the sin of adultery as is divorce and remarriage.
God will judge His people and knows our heart.
“ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. “ Hebrews 10:30-31
“ thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? “
The Greek word “ hierosuleis “ translated “ sacrilege “ means to rob temples.
It can also mean to commit sacrilege. Technically, robbing temples is obviously showing disrespect to what is sacred to God.
Webster defines the word “ sacrilege “ as - “ Violating something sacred to God or religion.”
It is interesting that even though Jesus is Himself the New Covenant, the New Testament and even though the temple was built under the time of the Law, He was still quite upset at the way people were disrespectfully treating the house of God.
“ And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. “ Mark 11:15-17
Notice Jesus would not allow anyone to bring any vessel into the temple.
“And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. “
Yes my friend, Mark did say;
“And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. “
My Dad was far from being a “ legalist “ but when I was a child, if he ever saw me showing disrespect in church he would let me know how he felt about it! LOL
In today’s modern evangelical society, while I’m in church I see church goers bringing cell phones and even leaving them on, water bottles, coffee, energy drinks, standing out in the foyer talking to friends even after the service starts and entering the service whenever they feel like it, bookstores to sell products and make money, etc…
Now, to not do these things is not “ legalism “ as the church leaders would accuse those of being who believe these things are disrespectful in the house of God.
To do or not do these things I see in church nowadays, is not a matter of being legalistic.
It is a matter of what kind of relationship we have with the Lord.
Are we sacrilegious like these Romans Paul addressed this issue to or are we respectful to the Lord who saved us?
I know the age old excuse that the building is not the church! LOL
I know it is those who belong to Jesus.
However, contrary to today’s modern evangelical philosophy about church, Jesus thought the temple was to be respected even in His day!
It is a matter of where our heart is.
I will continue with verse 23 in the next study.

Romans 2:19-20 ( posted 1-24-12 )
“ And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. “
Let’s continue.
Just like with the Galatians, Paul was addressing hypocrisy among these Roman christians in verses 17-20.
While they were proud of certain characteristics about themselves, Paul was using these characteristics they bragged about to show them their hypocrisy.
“ And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, “
Paul might have been saying this in a humorous sort of way to make a point.
He knew they were believers in Jesus Christ, followers of Jesus Christ and saved by their faith in Jesus but while claiming to be instructors in showing others the way to live they themselves weren’t living up to their standards of teaching.
Jesus clearly said this about the Pharisees;
“ Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. “ Matthew 15:12-14
It is interesting to me that Jesus taught His disciples not to even attempt to show certain people the error of their ways.
Jesus just said;
“ Let them alone: “
My friend, Jesus never taught those who follow Him to beg anyone to believe in Him.
Never beg anyone to come to Jesus or repeatedly attempt to convince them they need Jesus.
Jesus Himself never begged anyone to follow Him!
Jesus clearly said to do this if anyone rejects your witness;
“ And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. “ Mark 6:11
“ a light of them which are in darkness, “
These Roman christians knew Jesus’ declaration about those who follow Him as being the light of the world.
Jesus said;
“ Ye are the light of the world… “ Matthew 5:14
“ An instructor of the foolish, “
Paul said this about the Galatian christians;
“ O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? “ Galatians 3:1-3
A fool is a person void of common sense, judgment…a silly person.
A fool is not necessarily an uneducated person.
There is such a thing as an educated fool.
Festus, who knew Paul was one of society’s most highly educated people said this about Paul when Paul was preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ;
“ And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. “ Acts 26:24-25
Those of us who believe in Jesus Christ know Paul was obviously not a fool as Festus said Paul was.
Paul was not in danger of going to hell because he called the Galatians foolish or in what he said in the verse of our study;
“ An instructor of the foolish, “
or when Paul said;
“ Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: “ 1 Corinthians 15:36
even though Jesus said;
“ …but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. “ Matthew 5:22
To be honest with you, I do not know what Jesus meant here nor do I know to what extent He meant this because He did start out by declaring;
“ But I say unto you,... “ Matthew 5:22
If this is a concern to you and feels the same as cussing and cursing to you, which is something hopefully as a born again christian you would not do, then do not call anyone a fool.
If this or anything else bothers your conscience at all, do not do it.
Do not ever go against your conscience, especially if your conscience is toward God.
Fortunately, a fool is not without hope.
James said;
“ If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. “ James 1:5-7
Always keep this in mind…a “ smart mouth ’ is not a wise person. That is all he or she is…a “ smart mouth.”
A “ smart mouth “ is a fool.
“ a teacher of babes, “
Paul called the Corinthian christians babes;
“ And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. “ 1 Corinthians 3:1-2
Peter said;
“ Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. “ 1 Peter 2:1-3
“ which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. “
The Greek word “ morphosin “ translated “ form “ means appearance, formation, form.
It seems that Paul compares their instruction and spiritual leadership to that of a facade, since he adds;
“ in the law. “
Paul warned Timothy about people;
“ Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. “ 2 Timothy 3:5
Paul was obviously not promoting the Law as having the truth and something to live by.
Paul told the Galatians;
“ Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. “ Galatians 3:24-25
The point in all this that Paul is making is that teaching and living by the Law while claiming to believe in Jesus Christ does not mix.
If we teach both the Law and Jesus then our instruction is a façade, having only a form of truth and godliness with no power.
My friend, we are not under the Law.
I will continue with verse 21 in the next study.

Romans 2:17-18 ( posted 1-16-12 )
“ Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; “
For those of you who are new to my Bible study, I welcome you to read my series on Bible prophecy.
So far, I have completed seventeen parts.
The texts are entitled Revelation - Part One and so forth, through Revelation - Part Seventeen.
Enjoy!
Let’s continue.
“ Behold, thou art called a Jew, “
Paul wrote to these born again followers of Jesus Christ in the city of Rome.
Whoever led them to salvation in Jesus Christ was for sure a believer in Jesus Christ. Many of these Romans, like those in Galatia were once of the Judaistic faith and someone led them to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul got wind of them and wrote this letter that we are studying.
Obviously according to Paul’s strategy in discussion in the many verses to come, he is aware that even though these Romans converted in their heart to Jesus Christ, much like those in Galatia, Peter, Barnabas and others, many were returning to the Law of Moses for assurance of salvation in getting to Heaven.
Thankfully, since I got saved when I was about 8 years old, I had nothing in my prior life to return to that I fantasized would give me the assurance that would get me to Heaven when I died physically.
All I have ever known in my heart is Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
Therefore, doubting in my heart that Jesus is enough alone in Himself to get me to Heaven when I die was, is and never will be an issue.
Even though I have never met Jesus in person, He is just as real to me as my little wife is to me.
While I am careful not to trust everyone who publicly verbally proudly claims something like what is usually said to manipulate and impress an audience of listeners such as the most commonly said phrase - “ God told me this “, or “ God showed me this “, etc…, I did have an interesting moment one night.
Sometimes during the night when I wake up, I will reach over and lay my hand on my Bible that I always keep next to the bed on a table and tell the Lord that I love Him.
One night, someone set down on the bed beside me and laid his hand on my shoulder. I could not raise up to see who it was as it seemed I was not allowed to see who it was.
I felt safe as I pondered who this was and what was going on.
I realized quickly that whoever it was, was doing the same with me as I do when I lay my hand on my Bible and tell the Lord that I love Him.
I would not be surprised if the person who did that was the Lord Jesus Himself.
The face was not clearly visible but it seemed obvious to me it was the Lord.
For me, Jesus is enough to get me to Heaven.
I do not need Jesus plus anyone or anything else.
According to Jesus’ own words, if I do not believe in Him alone as sufficient for my salvation in getting me to Heaven, I will go to eternal hell when I draw that last breath in this life.
My Dad believed this about Jesus and when he died he died peacefully.
I’m so proud of my Dad. I watched him draw his last breath and he had peace and contentment in his face.
My Dad was not afraid to die.
I wish I knew others who are not afraid to die.
His faith was strong in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of his soul.
When I was a child my Dad told me - “ Memorize the words printed in red.”
By this he meant to believe what Jesus said.
While my Dad was not a perfect human…neither am I. Anyone who knows me will vouch for this fact. LOL!
As a matter of fact, as many people as I know, I know no one who is perfect.
I personally know many who are like the hypocrite Jesus decribed;
“ And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. “ Luke 18:9-14
Like my Dad did, I have to rely on the righteousness of Jesus Christ to get me to Heaven.
I do not have enough good works to get me there.
I personally know born again christians who believe in their heart that just because they have not sinned like other people have or as bad in their eyes as others have done, this fact is what will get them to Heaven.
Therefore, Jesus is null and void in their faith. Jesus is not necessary.
They believe it is their own self- righteous life of not being divorced, never drank wine or any alcoholic beverage, never smoked, never went to a bar, though they might admit they lusted and got turned on by women outside their marriage but never actually went to bed with any of them behind their spouse’s back and so on, this abstinence from these sins is what will get them into Heaven.
They claim to be saved but in truth it is their own self-righteousness that they trust will get them to Heaven…not Jesus.
This was the problem with many of the Romans as was with the Galatians, Peter, Barnabas and others.
The major problem was that of circumcision. Those who were once of the Judaistic faith, even though coming to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, came to a point in their faith in which they decided Jesus alone is not enough for their salvation.
They believed they had to be circumcised in order to make it to Heaven.
Paul discussed the problem with returning to the Law in that if they believed circumcision alone was enough for salvation, then according to the very Law they trusted to get them to Heaven they would have to obey everything else within the Law…which was spiritually and physically impossible.
Paul tried to point out that even if the Law could save us, circumcision alone was not enough.
The Law had much more to fulfill and obey…not just circumcision.
Paul said;
“ Behold, thou art called a Jew, “
Paul said this about himself;
“ I am verily a man which am a Jew,“ Acts 22:3
But Paul never went back to Judaism like many of the Romans and Galatians did.
In a sense these Romans were trying to live both in the faith of Jesus Christ and the Law.
Even though Paul said they rested their faith in the Law;
“ and restest in the law, “
Paul did acknowledge that they also believed in the gospel;
“And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, “
This phrase Paul said;
“ the things that are more excellent, “
is the same as the writer of Hebrews described Jesus;
“ Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. “ Hebrews 1:4
and also referring to Christ;
“ But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. “ Hebrews 8:6
and also when Peter said;
“ For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.“ 2 Peter 1:17-18
The more excellent things these Romans knew and believed even though they were taught in the Law.
“ being instructed out of the law; “
Paul is trying to rattle their cage.
He is pointing out the hypocrisy of claiming to believe in the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ and claiming to be a spirtitual leader of other people while still clinging to the letter of the Law.
To get the whole picture of what Paul is saying we must continue with the following verses.
I will continue with verse 19 in the next study.
Wayne Brown
Romans 1:1-3
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; “
I want to welcome those of you who are new to my Bible study.
You will find that I mostly use the KJV - King James Version.
I do use other versions as well and have no problem with it.
I would encourage you to read my text on - “Which Bible Should We Read?”
Let’s continue.
It is believed Paul probably wrote this letter around 58-60A.D.
Paul was on his third missionary journey.
He was in the house of Gaius.
He wrote this while in Corinth and probably sent this letter to Rome by a born again christian woman known as Phebe.
Paul wrote;
” I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: “ Romans 16:1
Phebe was a servant in the church of Cenchrea to the women of the church.
Cenchrea was located on the sea coast near Corinth.
Imagine this woman, this sister in the Lord Jesus Christ carrying the letter Paul wrote to the Romans that would become so widely read and discussed, criticized and challenged by both the religious and the secular world for centuries to come.
Obviously, the Catholic church claims that Peter started this church in Rome.
The Bible does not indicate that Peter even made it to Rome. If he had, surely the Bible would have said so.
Paul just said about whoever started this church;
” Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation: “ Romans 15:20
I cannot with valid basis argue whether Peter started this church or not.
Scripture does not even reveal to us whether the one who started the church at Rome was an “apostle".
Obviously it was someone who believed in Jesus since Paul said to them;
” Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. “ Romans 1:6-8
Paul already had friends in Rome that he acknowledges in Romans chapter 16.
The book of Romans has had great influence on people.
1.) Romans influenced Augustine in his conversion to Jesus in 386A.D.
2.) For Martin Luther, Romans was a “gateway to Heaven.”
3.) John Wesley was converted to Jesus while listening to Martin Luther’s preface to Romans.
The church at Rome comprised both Jews who were converted to Jesus and Gentiles who were converted to Jesus.
Paul for sure identifies himself as the author of this book.
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,”
Paul was once known as Saul.
Jesus called him Saul;
“ …Saul, Saul, why persecutes thou me?“ Acts 9:4
Paul was a Benjamite, born in Tarsus… in Asia Minor.
Paul was also a Pharisee educated in Jerusalem.
He was also a Roman citizen.
Paul was once a persecutor of born again Christians, those who followed Jesus.
Paul became a born again christian.
Luke wrote about Paul quoting Paul saying;
“Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished. “ Acts 22:1-5
Paul became a preacher and writer of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
” And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. “Acts 9:20
As far as canonization of the Scriptures, the letter to the Romans was placed at the beginning of Paul’s letters.
Probably because of the doctrinal content within.
The book of Romans does the following;
1.) Romans teaches of God’s wrath against sin
2.) Romans declares the world to be guilty of sin
3.) Romans teaches that the world needs to be forgiven of sin and needs salvation through Jesus Christ.
4.) Romans teaches how God deals with Jews and gentiles.
5.) Romans teaches even though no human being is good there is a way to be righteous and that is through faith in Jesus Christ.
In studying Romans we will learn about the Biblical doctrines of election, being chosen, predestination and eternal security. Let’s not forget the Biblical truth that Israel is “God’s chosen” and most of them still ended up in hell and will. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples was also “chosen” and still ended up in hell.
In studying Romans we will learn that salvation and continued salvation hinges on faith and continuance in the faith.
In studying Romans we will learn that the Law does not save a soul but faith in Jesus does.
Paul said he was;
” called to be an apostle,”
The Greek word “apostolos” translated ” apostle” means an ambassador of the gospel, a commissioner of Christ, a delegate, one who is sent.
If there are any “apostles” today, they would clearly be recognized in their proclamations and witnessed and confirmed by God‘s Holy Spirit in us.
A true “apostle” would not be embarrassed or ashamed to preach that Jesus is the only way to Heaven since obviously he or she would be sent of God to proclaim this truth about Jesus.
Since the gospel of Jesus Christ includes everything listed here;
“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. “ 1 Corinthians 12:27-28
then obviously a church leader who would deny or reject anything in this list would be a fraud.
I will continue with this soon.

Romans 2:16 ( posted 11-15-11 )
“ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
Let’s continue.
“ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
Paul said a lot in this statement.
The Greek word “ krupta “ translated “ secrets “ means private, concealed, hidden, secret.
Solomon said this long before Paul did.
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. “ Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Notice even back then, Solomon said;
“ whether it be good, or whether it be evil. “
Paul said the same thing in the New Testament.
“ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. “ 2 Corinthians 5:10
Like Solomon, Paul also said;
“ whether it be good or bad. “
While Solomon directed his statemen to human beings in general, Paul directed his statement primarily to those of us who follow Jesus Christ, those of us who are born again.
As I have said before, people who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who could have received God’s forgiveness of sin and could have escaped eternal damnation in hell because of what Jesus did on the cross, will be judged for all their sins…sins they could have been forgiven for had they believed in Jesus Christ.
Whatever good they did in life will lessen their torment in hell, even though they will still be there forever with no chance of escape.
This is why both Solomon and Paul made it clear that both kinds of works will be judged;
“ whether it be good, or whether it be evil. “
“ whether it be good or bad. “
Interesting enough, according to Jesus, there will be people who will suffer worse in hell than other people will.
Likewise, there will be followers of Jesus who will be rewarded more than others in Heaven.
My Dad said about himself, “ I will be in Heaven but I will probably only be a hair on Jesus’ rear end.”
My Dad knew that it was his faith in Jesus and that alone that would get him into Heaven, but as far as status and rewards in Heaven, he did not think he earned much.
According to the Holy Bible, salvation and entrance into Heaven is not earned.
According to the Holy Bible, rewards in Heaven are earned.
Again, this is why Solomon and Paul made it clear about both kinds of works;
“ whether it be good, or whether it be evil. “
“ whether it be good or bad. “
In the verse of our study, Paul clearly said;
“ God shall judge the secrets of men “
In accordance with Paul’s statement, I want to say a few things so I will not be guilty of the common evangelical “ pick and choose “ method of interpretation in establishing church doctrine or guilty of preaching only certain Bible verses that fit to my theology while rejecting other Bible verses that do not go along with my theological and/or philosophical views…as is commonly done.
While Jesus commended the christians at Ephesus for testing and examining church leaders who claimed to be called of God and placed in their position by God, who were found to be liars;
“ I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: “ Revelation 2:2
there are church leaders who actually are called of God and truly placed in their position by God.
Those who actually are called of God and appointed to their position are to be respected, obeyed and prayed for.
“ Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. “ Hebrews 13:7
“ Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. “ Hebrews 13:17
“ Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you. “ Hebrews 13:17
Yes, the Lord will judge frauds and liars in church leadership but He will also judge those who are not in places of church leadership who do not obey, respect and pray for those who are truly called of God and placed in church leadership by God.
Always remember what Paul said;
“ God shall judge the secrets of men “
This applies to everyone, even those of us who follow Jesus Christ.
While Paul did say about born again christians;
“ And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. “ 1 Corinthians 6:11
Paul also said about born again christians;
“ But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. “ Colossians 3:25
Again, remember what Paul said;
“ God shall judge the secrets of men “
While Jesus promised forgiveness for our sins just by believing in Him;
“ But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,…“ Matthew 9:6
Jesus also said;
“ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. “ Matthew 12:36
And if we think we can gossip about someone behind their back and it will never be known…?
Jesus said;
“ For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. “ Luke 12:2-3
Always remember what Paul said;
“ God shall judge the secrets of men “
Instead of being critical of government leaders, especially hating a President just because he is black, Paul said;
“ I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. “ 1 Timothy 2:1-2
“ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. “ Romans 13:1-2
Peter said;
“ But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. “ 2 Peter 2:10-11
Always remember what Paul said;
“ God shall judge the secrets of men “
Check out this part of the verse of our study;
“ by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
Paul could make this claim about himself in saying.
“ my gospel. “
but he did include Jesus in his statement;
“ by Jesus Christ “
Paul warned about “ other gospels “ being preached;
“ But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. “ 2 Corinthians 11:3-4
“ I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: “ Galatians 1:6
Unfortunately within evangelicalism today, there are multiple gospels.
Always remember what Paul said;
“ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
If we are arrogant enough to go through our life as a born again christian thinking we have never done anything wrong, or fat chance perhaps one or 2 things we think we might have done wrong, thinking that it was always someone else who did us wrong but we never did them wrong, or even know we have done wrong and secretly kept it hidden from other people, or if we have done good works and kept our good works secret as the Lord taught us to do, Paul said;
“ Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid. “ 1 Timothy 5:24-25
Always remember what Paul said;
“ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
I have to say, even if I fail the test of fire when my own works are judged when I stand before Jesus Christ;
“ Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. “ 1 Corinthians 3:13-15
it will just be nice to be in Heaven where I will not have to anymore endure being the target of someone’s jealousy, hatred, envy, backbiting, to be lied about and lied to, criticized, gossiped about behind my back, unfairly evaluated and falsely accused.
Heaven will be a far nicer place to live than this earthly life has been!
Why would we cling to this life in an attempt to live here forever, rather than go to live with Jesus in Heaven?
And as far as what living in Heaven is all about…it is about being with Jesus!
Jesus said to those who love Him;
“ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. “ John 14:3
That my friend, is what Heaven is all about!
“ that where I am, there ye may be also. “
I will continue with verse 17 in the next study.
