Romans 2:1 ( posted 8-30-11 )

“ Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.  “

Let’s continue.

“ Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: “

As in Romans chapter one, Paul is addressing human beings in general.

The Greek word “ anapologetos “ translated “ inexcusable “ means indefensible and is the same word he used back in Romans 1:20;

“ For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: “

Paul is saying that just as all human beings are indefensible, inexcusable concerning the things of God since God put the knowledge of Him in every human being and therefore nobody will be able to cry ignorance or say they never knew, likewise, when a human being judges another human being while doing the same thing or commiting another sin, is indefensible and inexcusable, totally unjustified in judging someone else.

When Jesus spoke against judging other people such as when He said;

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.Luke 6:41-42

Jesus also said there is a right kind of judgment.

I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.John 7:21-24

Yes, the same Jesus who said;

Judge not, that ye be not judged. “ Matthew 7:1

also said;

“ …judge righteous judgment.John 7:24

It is the same Greek word “ krino “ in all these verses, including the verse of our study.

It is also the same Greek word “ krino “ the writer of Hebrews used;

“  For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. “ Hebrews 10:30

The Greek word “ krino “ translated “ judge “ means anything from determining and calling into question, to actually condemning, punishing, avenge, and damning.

The kind of judgment Paul and Jesus warned against doing is obviously condemning, punishing, getting even, and damning someone.

But according to Jesus it is okay to judge in the sense of determining and calling into question someone’s behavior or what is said.

This is how the church people at Ephesus determined who were liars in positions of church leadership.

“  I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: “ Revelation 2:2

These followers of Jesus in the church at Ephesus had to make a judgment to determine among their church leaders who lied about being called into the ministry, into the position of pastoral ministry, and any other kind of church leadership position they claimed God put them in.

Jesus said they found these church leaders to be liars;

and hast found them liars:

Jesus commended them for making this judgment and doing something about it.

“ for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.  “

Here is the problem with judging not only in condemning someone but judging while also commiting sin.

In doing this we are definitely hypocrites.

Jesus said;

Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. Luke 6:42

Do we lust after someone, get sexually turned on by someone, flirt, fantasize of someone, have a sexual encounter or multiple sexual encounters outside our marriage with someone other than our spouse but at the same time condemn a person who is caught in adultery, divorced and remarried?

According to Jesus, lust is the same as commiting adultery, divorce and remarriage.

Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.

And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.Mark 10:11-12

“  Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.Matthew 5:27-28

This is one of many examples of what Paul was talking about in this verse we are studying;

“ Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.  “

Since I’m on the issue of lust, adultery, divorce and remarriage, it is interesting as despised and condemning as these sins are by christians who think that they are guiltless because they are still with the same spouse, even though you have had multiple sexual affairs with people outside your marriage while doing this behind your spouse’s back, viewed porno and got off sexually while viewing porno, masturbated in private while fantasizing of that pretty girl you can’t get your mind off of, none of these sins are unforgivable or considered sins that can keep a person out of Heaven as the sins of blasphemyand “ hatred “ are.

Yes my friend, even as bad as these sins are nothing is said about lust, adultery, divorce and remarriage as being unforgivable and damnable.

But blasphemy and hatred certainly are!

Check this out!

Jesus said;

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.Matthew 12:31-32

John said;

“ Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. “ 1 John 3:15

And my friend, most of evangelicalism has commited blasphemyagainst the Holy Spirit by attributing the works and gifts of Him who is God, to the devil or the work of human beings.

The world can’t do this since they know nothing of the Holy Spirit and His works and gifts. You cannot blaspheme what you know nothing of.

And the hatred John mentioned?

Well, if we think we can live in hatred toward someone while claiming to be in Jesus, we may be in for a big surprise.

And what John warned about is not a “ hypothetical situation.”

Evangelicals who teach that what John said here is merely " hypothetical " are the same ones who have blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

Sorry, but what John said is reality!

I will continue with verse 2 in the next study.
