Romans 1:11-12
” For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
Rom 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. “
Let’s continue.
The Greek word “hepipotho” translated “ I long ” means a deep desire, a craving to possess. Paul wanted so much to meet these Christians.
If there were planes in his day and he did not have the money to fly he would have possibly tried to climb into the wheel well of the plane and ride.
The point is that he strongly wanted to meet them.
Why?
He says why in the next phrase;
” that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, “
And why did he want to do this?
” to the end ye may be established; “
The Greek words ” eis to sterichthenai humas” translated “ to the end ye may be established; ” means to strengthen, to turn resolutely in a certain direction, to steadfastly set.
Now listen up!
Paul already acknowledged that these Christians were actually followers of Jesus Christ and were born again by their faith in Jesus.
But now he knew they needed help in staying with the Lord to the end of physical life.
That is the purpose of the “gifts” of the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word “charisma” translated “gift ” means a divine gratuity- that is, deliverance from danger or passion, specifically a spiritual endowment, religious qualification, miraculous faculty, and free gift.
No, it is not a requirement to be born again, to be saved.
The thief on the cross never received any of the spiritual gifts and still made it to Heaven, according to Jesus‘ own words. If he had been left here to live in the years to come he probably would have realized the need for spiritual gifts.
This is intended to give a follower of Jesus strength in following Him.
These early Christians endured persecution for their faith, something Christians today here in America no nothing about.
Paul wanted to lay hands on these Christians so they could receive strength from a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Paul reminded Timothy;
” Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. “
2 Timothy 1:6-7
Timothy was obviously going through a tough time in his life and Paul reminded him that he had a spiritual gift in him to help him.
My friend, that is what the spiritual gifts of God are all about…to help us in our walk with the Lord, to witness to others, and to edify each other in the body of Christ.
The gifts is not what saved us as these Romans were already saved.
They are a help to us in our walk with Jesus.
If we reject this part of the gospel then we are telling the Lord we do not want a closer relationship with Him.
If you do not believe this then as Paul said you are of a different gospel as this is all part of the same gospel that Paul preached.
You cannot be a follower of Jesus and reject parts of the Holy Bible, nor can you be a follower of Jesus and reject parts of what Jesus said.
Jesus clearly said;
“ But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. “ Acts 1:9
The problem with not believing this part of the Bible is that you will not believe other parts of the Bible as well.
And if Paul could get to them to impart a spiritual gift unto them then he can as he said;
” That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. “
Paul was for sure comparing his faith to theirs, since they were of the same faith as he.
Paul needed to be comforted in knowing these Christians had the gifts of the Holy Spirit working in their life.
I will continue with verse 13 in the next study.
