John 9:34 ( posted 2-12-11 )
“ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. “
Let’s continue.
“ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. “
This is interesting.
Some of them questioned if he was the same man born blind.
Now they are admitting they knew about this man’s entire life and how they all thought the reason this man was born blind was because of his sin and/or his parents.
The Greek word “holos” translated “ altogether “ means whole, all, complete, throughout.
These Pharisees were saying that this man born blind was born in sin and was full of sin which they concluded resulted in him being born blind.
If you remember in an earlier study, we learned that Jesus’ disciples also thought this man was born blind because of his sin and/or his parents.
Jesus’ response to His disciples curiosity was;
“…Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. ” John 9:3
This conclusion is also interesting;
“ Thou wast altogether born in sins, “
Most religions deny that human beings are born in sin. Jesus is the only one who taught this - that is, that we as human beings, are born in sin.
Most religions teach that human beings become sinful and full of sin during the course of life. The way to be cleansed from sin according to them is through rituals, ceremonies of various sort, self deprivation and doing good works.
This is a common view among most people in general.
This is another reason most people reject Jesus and His teaching and the fact He claimed to alone, atone for our sin. People in general think Jesus is either not necessary or He is not enough to atone for our sin in Himself alone.
If someone asked a survey question in a poll it would reveal that even within the realm of evangelicalism, most people believe that it takes Jesus plus works of various sort to be cleansed from sin and to make it to Heaven…that Jesus alone is not enough.
According to what the apostle Paul called “the faith” this is what determines whether a person is actually saved, born again and on his or her way to Heaven, or not.
A person cannot be saved and believe that it takes Jesus plus this or that or the other to make it to Heaven.
Either he must believe Jesus is enough in Himself or he is not of “the faith”.
“ and dost thou teach us? ”
This is funny.
Have you ever tried to reason with a person who thinks he or she is a “ know it all ” ?
Clearly Jesus said;
“ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. “ Matthew 12:36-37
But even with Jesus warning us about this you know, much like these arrogant Pharisees, there was a famous celebrity here in the United States that said - “ The first chance I get, I’m going to spit in God’s face.”
He is not alone with this attitude.
There are many people that think they have never sinned, ( maybe something once in a while that really did not amount to much ) made good money and did everything right and when Jesus nabs them on something when they stand before Him, they too will argue with Him, just as the celebrity who plans on spitting in God’s face.
Jesus clearly said it will be the meek who inherit the earth, not the arrogant.
“ Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.“ Matthew 5:5
“ And they cast him out. “
Actually, these Pharisees did this man a favor by casting him out of the synagogue.
The Bible teaches those who follow Jesus should be with people of like faith.
Even though this man born blind was not a follower of Jesus yet, this man needed to depart from them for his own sake.
I will continue with verse 35 in the next study.
The Lord bless you!
